Hueneme, Oxnard go back and forth

Oxnard pulled within 16-14 of visiting Hueneme as Henry Fernandez and Terrail Watson combined for a 7-play, 74-yard drive, Watson scoring on a 6-yard touchdown run with 9:51 to play.

Hueneme quarterback Jonathan Barnfather responded with a 9-plat, 53-yard touchdown drive. Penalties had backed Hueneme into a first and 30 situation, but, freed by a pass interference flag, the Vikings looked like salting away a key league win with Barnfather's 16-yard touchdown pass to Nick Fabian with 5:29 left.

But Fernandez's 43-yard touchdown romp pulled Oxnard within 23-21 with 4:20 to play.

Oxnard recovered the subsequent onsides kick, but Hueneme gained possession on an illegal touching flag. But Hueneme turned the ball over on downs after Fernandez made plays on third and fourth downs.

Big game atmosphere

It's still more than 60 minutes before the start of the 99th meeting between Fillmore and Santa Paula but the place is packed. Even the press box is filled, including folks from The Star's web site and Time Warner cable. For the second straight year, the game looks like it will decide the Frontier League champion.
There's very few games in the county where fans from the two sides are as passionate and that passion brings a buzz that few high school games can match.

Marsh Commits to LSU

Oaks Christian School senior lineman Cassius Marsh made a verbal commitment this morning to play football at LSU.

Marsh chose LSU over USC, Cal and Oklahoma. The 6-foot-5, 288-pound Marsh originally committed to Cal, but changed his mind after taking other visits.

"I think he was a little too excited when he was up at Cal and a little too fired up," Oaks Christian head coach Bill Redell said. "It was one of his first trips and they do a great job recruiting. But he wanted to see a few other places, and really liked LSU. He is elated to be going there."

Marsh is the first Oaks Christian football player to ever commit to LSU, and is the final playing in this season's big six to make his college choice. Zac Stout and Alani Fua have committed to Brigham Young University, Nick Montana and Erik Kohler are heading to Washington and Malcolm Jones will be signing with UCLA.

Devon Blackledge broke a 57-yard gain on third and 2 to sett up a 2-yard Logan Meyer touchdown sneak and a 31-13 St. Bonaventure lead with 3:47 left in the third quarter.

But Buena, aided by 45 yards of St. Bonaventure personal fouls, marched right down the field to pull within 31-19 on Tyler Perry's miraculous
23-yard diving catch of Robert Munoz's fourth down double reverse pass.

Devon Blackledge rips off a 30-yard gain on third and 1 from the Seraphs 44-yard line to move St. Bonaventure to the Buena 26 in the final minute of the half.

St. Bonaventure looked set for a game-tying field goal try, but a roughing the passer flag on a third-down incompletion cost Buena.

One play later, Logan Meyer scrambled for a 10-yard touchdown run and a 17-13 SB lead with 17 seconds left in the half.

UPDATE: St. Bonaventure leads 17-13 at the half. Blackledge has 198 yards from scrimmage on 13 carries and two receptions. St. Bonaventure has four lost fumbles.

Tyler Perry punts from his own end zone and St. Bonaventure turns the ball over on punt return for the third time in the first quarter, which ends tied 7-7.

St. Bonaventure cornerback Troy Hill gets the ball back with an interception. It's the fifth turnover of the first game.

St. Bonaventure moves the ball to the Buena 9 on six straight Devon Blackledge carries. But Matt Arve sacks Logan Meyer on first and goal for a 14-yard loss.

Buena misses early chance in battle of 5-1s

In its battle of 5-1 teams, Buena started slowly, going backwards 14 yards on a fumbled snap on the first play from scrimmage and following that inauspicious debut with two incomplete passes.

But St. Bonaventure fumbled the punt. Junior Bret Coleman recovered. Buena quarter Robert Munoz connected with tight end Tyler Perry for 17 yards on a third down. The subsequent late hit gave Buena the ball on the Seraphs 25.

But Buena couldn't convert on second or third and short and missed the 33-yard field goal to spurn the opportunity.

Super conference?

The super-sized Marmonte League has three of the Top 17 teams in this week's CalHiSports' state rankings -- No. 1 Oaks Christian, No. 11 Moorpark and No. 17 St. Bonaventure.

Two weeks ago, prior to St. Bonaventure's upset to Bishop Amat, the poll had Oaks Christian at No. 1, St. Bonaventure at No. 3 and Moorpark at No. 13.

The total jumps to four teams in Rivals.com's Southern Section rankings -- No. 2 Oaks Christian, No. 4 Moorpark, No. 7 St. Bonaventure and No. 24 Westlake.

This week's CIF-SS rankings features No. 1 Moorpark, No. 3 St. Bonaventure, No. 4 Westlake and No. 5 Newbury Park in the Northern Division and No. 1 Oaks Christian in the Northwest Division.

"More bad news" for Marmonte League

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

"There's more bad news here," Simi Valley High athletic director Matt La Belle told Moorpark athletic director Rob Dearborn Thursday evening.

It looks like the Marmonte League added more state powers than playoff berths Thursday.

Originally, it was thought that 10-team league would split up into two divisions, each with three combined playoff berths. But it appears only 40 percent of the league will be guaranteed postseason berths, rather than 60 percent of a typical five-team league.

"We're in a 10-team league with nine league games," said Dearborn. "That's what's voted on and it can't be changed.

"We're not an association. We're a league. Big difference.

"We could split the league in half but we still only get four playoff spots, so it doesn't make much sense."

That would mean each school would have a single non-league game to schedule each season.

"We all have contracts for games that we're going to have to break," said Dearborn. "This is set by CIF. That's the way it is unless there's some new ground broken.

"It's a big, big mess."

Ventura High coach Brad Steward's reaction

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Ventura High football coach Brad Steward on St. Bonaventure leaving the Channel League to join Oaks Christian in the new super Marmonte League next fall:

"I haven't any input in this thing at all. My response today was 'Wow, that's huge news!'

"I kind of have mixed emotions. I feel like... It's a difficult thing to express, isn't it? I've always enjoyed being able to prepare against the best team around. We'll have one more time. It's just been difficult coming out on the short end of it again and again.

"I'll miss that opportunity to play the best team in the state of California. We got to do that because they were in our league. It's exciting for our guys to put in the preparation like that.

(Is this solving anything? Isn't the Marmonte League just being put in the position the Channel League has been in?)

"Maybe those guys are better suited to having them than we are. I do feel like we've had our turn."

"Things change. I think we need to do as good a job as we can, frequently, to make sure we do the best job we can for kids."

Ventura High AD David Hess' reaction

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Ventura High athletic director and Channel League representative David Hess on St. Bonaventure and Oaks Christian joining the Marmonte League for the 2010 season, which proposed Thursday in Long Beach:

"I was pretty surprised. We're happy in that our goal from the start of this process was to find a more competitive place for St. Bonaventure football... We feel that we have done that... As it played out, my ultimate obligation was to take care of kids in the Channel League and at Ventura High.

"As (the) meeting approached, nobody was talking to us, which was an indicator that people were talking in a way that was not going to go well for the Channel League... So we needed to look at the process and what was available to us.

"What do we think will work if whole lot of schools that are not in Ventura County are voting? How do we tell the story?

"We did not want to bring St. Bonaventure in for all sports... Ultimately we felt that would not be good for all sports for St. Bonaventure."

"We didn't want to do something that was simply punative... If we supported St. Bonaventure coming into the league for all sports, we were saying that it was alright for St. Bonaventure to be in the Channel League for football and we're not... We wanted to stand on that principle."

Agoura High coach Charlie Wegher's reaction

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Agoura High football coach Charlie Wegher on St. Bonaventure and Oaks Christian joining the Marmonte League for football beginning in 2010:

"I was a little surprised because I had heard that proposal floated. I didn't think it had much of a chance to succeed. But that's not how it went.

"Before I can fully react, I need to know how we're going to break down the league."

(Are you against a full 10-team league with nine league games?)

"Oh yeah, that can't be. That's not right. You can still schedule the same teams (prior to league play). But I think if you're going to do what's right, you need to have four league games and six preseason games.

"I haven't done a lot of thinking on what is best, but I have a feeling they'll probably try to make two competitive leagues."

Royal High coach Kevin Flye's reaction

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Royal High football coach Kevin Flye's reaction on St. Bonaventure and Oaks Christian joining the Marmonte League for the 2010 season:

"You don't want to hear my reaction. It's obviously not a good thing. I'm with the majority that feels that private schools have no business in our leagues.

"It's not a good day. One of them coming in would have been bad enough. But two? There's not one good thing about it."

(is it a surprise?)

"From what I hear, there are different scenarios. We knew this might happen. I hear now that the Thousand Oaks schools may be trying to put something together.

"It depends on what half (of the league) you're in how you really feel about it.

"It may be a full-power league. Now teams that don't make the playoffs won't make the playoffs. It's not a good deal.

"It's something we thought might happen. It hoped it would."

(What about if the top five were put in one side and the bottom five put in another)

"Let's be honest. That benefits us, if we're in the right half of the league. But I have friends coaching at those other schools. It's just not right."

St. Bonaventure, Oaks Christian join Marmonte football league

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Shocking events today from The Grand in Long Beach, where a late proposal to lump Oaks Christian and St. Bonaventure into the Marmonte League for football was passed by the CIF-Southern Section council.

Here's David Lassen on the events:

LONG BEACH - Oaks Christian and St. Bonaventure will end up in the same football league after all - but it will be a 10-team Marmonte League,  not a proposed four-team private-school football league.

Endorsing appeals by Ventura and Calabasas high schools, the CIF-Southern Section council voted Thursday to move the area's private-school powers into the Marmonte League for football only, while leaving all other schools intact.

In doing so by a 41-21 vote with nine abstentions, the council - a body representing one vote for each Southern Section league - overrode a vote by the nine leagues in the Northern Area that would have had Oaks Christian and Calabasas change places, with Oaks Christian joining the Marmonte League for all sports, while moving Calabasas into the Tri-County Athletic Association.

Coming at the end of a long and contentious releaguing process, the decision is final and will take affect for four seasons, beginning with the 2010-2011 school year.

"As football in Ventura County goes, I believe it's a good thing," said St. Bonaventure principal Marc Groff. "Since it's football only. ... I'm certainly very interested to see what these other configurations are. I need to digest it a little bit."

The 10-team league will be split into two five-team units, details of which are uncertain.

"From a football interest standpoint, I think people in Ventura County should be excited that the best teams are all going to play each other."

The plan to put Oaks and St. Bonaventure in the same league was floated early in the releaguing process but did not gain traction within the Northern Area's releaguing procedure. So its reemergence, as a proposal introduced at Thursday's meeting, created a wide range of reaction.

Lassen's live Twitter updates are available here. More to come at VCStar.com later in the day.

The Newbury Park High football program has reached a milestone.

The 35-14 win over Royal last Friday was the 250th in Newbury Park's history.

Newbury Park's overall record is 250-195-8.

Over half of the victories came during the 19-year career of former coach George Hurley. Hurley's teams were 130-81-2. Newbury Park won a section title in 1993 and was a runner-up in 1995.

Friday Football Rewind

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Maybe it was all the homecoming games on the slate, but last night turned into "Blowout Friday" with hardly any competitive games. The starters got plenty of rest with many heading to the bench before the first half was over.

The CliffsNotes version:

- Oxnard 44, Channel Islands 7: So much for that 5-0 start for Channel Islands. Oxnard showed the Raiders which team remains the one to beat in the Pacific View League. The Yellowjackets ran all over C.I. Henry Fernandez scored four touchdowns, including a 60-yard punt return, and Alex Gavin finished with 194 yards on 20 carries in the league opener.

- Camarillo 27, Pacifica 23: Camarillo is getting pretty good at this fourth-quarterback comeback stuff. The Scorpions roared back to win for the second time in three weeks. Quarterback Jeff Mathews hit Chase Tackett for a 12-yard touchdown and running back Ossie Toc ran in the winning score from 4 yards away with 5:36 to play. Camarillo has outscored its past four opponents 50-6 in the final quarter. Toc ran for a career-high 183 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. Mathews completed 13 of 16 passes for 220 yards, including a pair 53-yard strikes to offensive lineman-turned-tight end Andy Dean.

- Rio Mesa 40, Hueneme 7: Jamaal Perkins rushed for 224 and three touchdowns and Rio Mesa's defense held twice inside its own 10-yard line to hand Hueneme an all-too-familiar league loss despite its strong start to the season. Hueneme lost starting quarterback Jonathan Barnfather to an injury in the third quarter. The Vikings completed 14 of 44 passes for 235 yards and were held to 40 yards rushing. Rio Mesa has won nine straight over Hueneme.

- Newbury Park 35, Royal 17: Phillip Muscarella finished with six catches for 108 yards, 30 rushing yards, a 52-yard punt return and a 44-yard kickoff return for the Panthers. Cameron Roberson rushed for 92 yards and four touchdowns. Newbury Park QB Jake Geringer finished 14 of 20 for 205 yards. His counterpart Zach Collins finished 13 of 32 for 217 yards with an interception for Royal while Ryan Stevens had five catches for 134 yards. Newbury Park scored the final 21 points of the game.

- Moorpark 28, Simi Valley 0: Talk about a predictable result. Running back Austin Edmonson scored all the touchdowns with four while gaining 166 yards on just nine carries - only one of them after halftime. In a fitting metaphor for Simi's season so far, the Pioneers had to yield any homefield advantage to Moorpark becuase the bleachers at their own stadium were not ready yet. It likely wouldn't have mattered against the ever-consistent Moorpark train. Moorpark quarterback Brody Rohach was 4 for 7 for 56 yards.

- Westlake 51, Calabasas 6: Yet another no brainer in terms of forecasting the winner. The Warriors scored 27 points in the opening 12 minutes to drain any drama from the proceedings. Westlake QB Nick Isham, who came into the game completing over 70 percent of his passes, finished with 16 completions in 19 attempts for 178 yards -- all in the first half. Nelson Spruce caught six passes for 76 yards.

- Thousand Oaks 35, Agoura 14: Lancers quarterback Avondre Bollar displayed his all-around dominance against the Chargers. Bollar scored on an 11-yard run and threw touchdown passes of 7, 5, 10 and 13 yards in the first half to give T.O. all its points.

- Buena 36, Dos Pueblos 3: Playoffs? Yes Buena you can begin thinking about the playoffs already. Quarterback Robert Munoz completed passes to five different receivers and finished an efficient 13 for 16 with 175 yards and one touchdown. Kendrick Mathis, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound sophomore, rushed 17 times for 104 yards and two TDs, was 2-for-2 passing for 36 yards, caught one pass for 5 yards and rushed for a two-point conversion at the end of the first half. He also figured out a solution for world peace. OK, so that is a stretch.

- Ventura 38, Santa Barbara 23: The Michael Jordan effect was in play for Ventura senior Isaac Archibeque. He was sick to his stomach before the game, but returned the opening kickoff 79 yards for his first career touchdown and recovered a pair of fumbles to set up two third-quarter touchdowns. It was also a big night for Joe Mendoza. He caught a few passes and was crowned homecoming king at halftime.

- St. Bonaventure 42, San Marcos 0: The Seraphs decided to let Logan Meyer air it out in the Channel League opener. The senior QB completed 23 of 30 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns in less than three quarters of play. Tieler Souza was Meyer's favorite target, catching 10 passes for 122 yards and three scores.

- Oaks Christian 65, Bishop Diego 6: Star correspondent Zachary McVicker wrote it best - "Oaks Christian School awaits a decision by a committee vote on Thursday to decide if it will be moved out of the Tri-Valley League for football because of its recent dominance. Bishop Diego probably wishes the decision could have been made before Friday night." UCLA-bound running back Malcolm Jones rushed for 141 yards and four touchdowns in only one quarter. The Lions might have scored 150 points if Jones went the distance.

- Oak Park 13, Carpinteria 0: Scoring was at a minimum, but the Eagles defense never budged. Aki Zapata scored on a 7-yard run with 9:14 remaining in the third quarter to spark the Oak Park High. After a scoreless first half, the Connor McFadden recovered a fumble on the second-half kickoff. Five plays later, Zapata capped the 22-yard scoring drive with a pivotal block by Tyler Benton. Oak Park QB Conner Hill completed 9 of 17 passes for 80 yards with one interception.

- Nordhoff 44, Santa Clara 7: The Rangers led 23-0 by the end of the first quarter to win their fifth straight game. Logan Crow opened the second quarter with a 50-yard punt return for a touchdown. He also caught three passes for 55 yards.

- Fillmore 56, Villanova 7: The Flashes ran all over Villanova in the Frontier League opener. Nick Paz rushed for 141 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns and also returned an interception 75 yards and a kickoff for 51 yards. Fillmore had eight rushers who gained 446 yards on 54 carries and scored seven touchdowns. Villanova likes to run as well, but could never get anything generated against Fillmore's defense. The lone touchdown came when Sammy Davis  returned the opening kickoff of the second half 85 yards for the score.

- Santa Paula 41, Grant 26: Kameron Klien rushed for more than 100 yards and Ivan Ledesma added more than 100 yards receiving in the non-league road win.

- Malibu 21, Grace Brethren 6: Grace Brethren's offense wilted in the intense heat of the rare afternoon kickoff.

For the second time in three weeks, the Camarillo High football team scored the last two touchdowns to turn a double-digit deficit into a come-from-behind win.

Quarterback Jeff Matthews hit Chase Tackett for a 12-yard touchdown and running back Ossie Toc ran in the winning score from 4 yards away with 5:36 to play as Camarillo opened Pacific View League play with a 27-23 comeback win over host Pacifica Friday night.

"Just believe," said Toc. "We all have heart on this team."

Camarillo (5-1, 1-0) has outscored its past four opponents 50-6 in the final quarter, all victories.

"We've done it before," said Matthews, who threw two touchdowns in the final 2:53 to beat Ventura 26-25 on Oct. 2. "We have confidence in each other."

Toc ran for a career-high 183 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. Matthews completed 13 of 16 passes for 220 yards, including a pair of timely 53-yard strikes to tight end Andy Dean, and two touchdowns.

Camarillo trailed 17-7 with 4:16 left in the third quarter and 23-14 with 10:56 to play.

Back and forth at Pacifica

Henry Pineda's 21-yard field goal and Max Mondol's 4-yard scoring strike to Pierre Gutter, following a 44-yard interception return by defensive lineman Mark Samoa, gave Pacifica a 17-7 lead over Camarillo with 4:16 left in the third quarter.

Jeff Matthews pulled Camarillo within 17-14 with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Molesworth along the right sideline, set up by a 53-yard strike to tight end  Andy Dean on third and 17.

But Pacifica pushed the lead back out to nine points on Jose Garcia's 4-yard touchdown run with 10:56 to play, which capped off a 6-play, 65-yard scoring drive, which included a 30-yard Mondol pass to Frankie Estanol.

UPDATE: Camarillo pulls within 23-21 on Matthews' 13-yard strike to Chase Tackett with 8:28 to play, capping a 7-play, 66-yard scoring drive.

Tac evens things up for Camarillo

Camarillo answers with a 9-play, 79-yard drive on the legs of running back Ossie Tac, who breaks three long runs before finishing the march from 3 yards out with 2:01 left in the half.

Tac has already rushed for 88 yards and the score on 12 carries, including runs of 13, 12, 12, 12, 14 and 11 yards.

Pacifica recovered a punt on the Camarillo 23 with six seconds left in the half, but two incompletions later, the teams go to the half tied at 7.

Razo gives Pacifica the lead

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Tight end Jaime Razo pops a rocket screen and lopes 70 yards for a Max Mondol touchdown pass, which gives Pacifica a 7-0 lead with 4:19 left in the first half.

The Pacific View League opened slowly until until Pacifica LB Marqus Williams' jarring hit on Camarillo QB Jeff Matthews, which popped off the QBs helmet on a third down play late in the first quarter.

Both quarterbacks combined to complete 15 of their first 18 passes.

Marmonte League on releaguing

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The Marmonte League will vote to add Oaks Christian School into its league for all sports at the meeting of the CIF-Southern Council in Long Beach next Thursday.
The league's choice, revealed in a letter released Thursday, would amount to a swap of Calabasas for Oaks Christian in the next releaguing cycle that begins in 2010. The Northern Area's new makeup will be up for a vote by its nine member leagues during the releaguing session.
The Marmonte League's statement said it based its preference on competitive equity and the desire to remain an eight-team circuit.
Four proposals will be on the table when the Northern Area convenes for the CIF-SS Council meeting.

Valentino commits to play softball at UNLV

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Agoura High senior Stefany Valentino has verbally committed to play softball at UNLV. The 5-foot-4 Valentino batted .329 with 28 hits, five doubles, five home runs, 11 RBIs and 20 runs scored last season for Agoura. The all-Marmonte League first-team selection had a slugging percentage of .588 and stole six bases in eight attempts.
Valentino, who plays for the So Cal Pumas travel team, is the third Agoura player to make a verbal commitment this year. Shannon Kaufman plans to attend Sacramento State and Julie Lewis plans to attend Colorado State.

In other softball news, Oaks Christian School pitcher Kiana Quolas was selected the national high school Player of the Year by the National Christian School Athletic Association.
Quolas, a junior, had a 15-3 record with a 0.80 ERA and 181 strikeouts in 130 2/3 innings as a sophomore and was named Tri-Valley League MVP. She also hit .459 with five home runs and 29 RBIs. Oaks Christian catcher Savannah Carpenter and Grace Brethren's Kassy Dunn and Danielle Fletcher were named to the All-Far West roster.

Eisenbrand Gone For Season

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

There is never a good time to lose your top singles player, but there are worse times than others.

Sophomore Kristina Eisenbrand told Moorpark girls' tennis coach Sandy Jacobs she will not play the remainder of the season because she is attending a tennis academy in Spain.

Eisenbrand participated in Moorpark's loss to Rio Mesa yesterday - sweeping her sets in the process - and left today for Spain.

Moorpark's schedule this week includes matches against Marmonte League-leaders Westlake and Thousand Oaks. Today's match against Westlake was postponed, however, because of the rain and will be played on Monday.

"I thought we might have a chance against Westlake," Jacobs said. "But without Kristina, that is pretty much impossible. Her absence changes everything."

Now, Moorpark will likely battle Simi Valley for the final two automatic playoff spots in league.

"We should be able to get fourth place, especially since we do have that one win over Simi Valley already," Jacobs said. "Hopefully, we can squeak out fourth place. We have to see. You never know when one of your top girls gets sick or what is going to happen."

Coming of age

With a roster filled with young players, La Reina girls' tennis coach Bowie Hahn knew his team might experience some "growing pains," early this season. Sure enough, the Regents lost four of their first five non-league matches.
But the losses gave the youngsters valuable experience and since league began, the Regents have been red hot.
On Thursday, La Reina (4-0) defeated Malibu 11-7 to take sole possession of first place in the Tri-Valley League. One of the key performances was turned in by the double team of Gaby Stevens and Niki Anaya who swept their sets. Stevens is a freshman and Anaya is in her first season as a varsity player.

Jones Chooses UCLA

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Oaks Christian senior running back Malcolm Jones has verbally committed to play football at UCLA.

The 6-foot, 215-pound Jones selected the Bruins over Stanford today.

"When I got to the school, it felt most comfortable to me," Jones told MaxPreps.com. "My gut instinct was it felt right there."

Jones' selection will also create another sibling rivalry between UCLA and USC. His older brother, Marshall, is a defensive back for the Trojans.

"It will be fun to see what happens," Malcolm said. "When we get older, we can talk about it. It will be fun."

In four games this season, Jones has rushed for an area-leading 870 yards and nine touchdowns. The two-way player has been a key player for Oaks Christian since his freshman season. He rushed for 1,505 yards and 26 touchdowns last season while leading the Lions to a 14-0 record.

The Voice of Volleyball

Carly Roberg really goes the extra mile on game days for the Ventura High girls' volleyball team. The junior middle blocker not only starts for the Cougars, she also sings the national anthem. Roberg belted out a great rendition last night before Ventura's game against Buena.
"And that's after she has warmed up and run around a little bit and needs to catch her breath," Ventura coach Jared Godinez said. "She is very good. It's pretty impressive."
If the volleyball thing doesn't work out as a player, Roberg can surely find teams willing to have her sing the anthem at their games any time.

St. Bonaventure's Ranking Freefall

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

St. Bonaventure's loss to Bishop Amat continues to cost the Seraphs in the national football rankings.

They took a freefall in the Rivals.com Top 100, plummeting from No. 26 to completely out of the rankings. Oaks Christian moved down to No. 16 from No. 13 after it's victory over Venice.

In the USA Today Top 25 national rankings, St. Bonaventure dropped out after being No. 17 last week. Oaks Christian moved up two spots to No. 5. The Lions are the only California school represented in the rankings.

Moorpark No. 1

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The Moorpark High football team moved up to No. 1 in the CIF-Southern Section Northern Division polls Monday.
Unbeaten in four games, Moorpark jumped ahead of St. Bonaventure, which dropped to No. 3 behind Valencia.
Moorpark improved to 4-0 with a 35-7 win over Calabasas last week, while St. Bonaventure lost in overtime to Bishop Amat, 24-23. The loss snapped St. Bonaventure's 14-game winning streak.
Other county teams in the top 10 are: 4. Westlake, 5. Newbury Park, 6. Oxnard, 8. Channel Islands and 9. Hueneme.
Oaks Christian remains the No. 1 team in the Northwest Division poll as well as owning the top spot in the state rankings.
Nordhoff is ranked No. 10 in the Northwest Division.
Santa Paula remains the No. 2-ranked East Valley Division team behind St. Margaret's. Villanova Prep is No. 10.

Grace Brethren's passing circus

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Grace Brethren quarterback Max Leffler has the third-best passing performance in Ventura County history.

In Friday's 41-32 non-league football loss to Frazier Mountain, Leffler completed 17 of 45 passes for 510 yards and four TDs.

The 510 yards ranks behind the county record of 529 by Simi Valley's Robbie Fierro in 2004 and the 524 by Rudy Carpenter of Newbury Park against Agoura in 2002.

Leffler's favorite targets were Jack Gilliland, who caught 8 passes for 260 yards (sixth-best in county history) and Patrick Schafer, who had five catches for 146 yards.

Friday Football Rewind

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

St. Bonaventure's bowl hopes likely went bye bye, Malcolm Jones kept Oaks Christian's right on track and Ventura was on the opposite end of a comeback this week.

More news, notes and highlights from Week 4:

Bishop Amat 24, St. Bonaventure 23 (OT): St. Bonaventure barely escaped last week in overtime against Crespi, but couldn't make it two in a row. The Seraphs felt the sting of special teams this time as they were the ones missing the extra point in overtime. Big plays were St. Bonaventure's undoing -- they gave up way too many and paid the price. It likely will cost them a bowl game bid in the end.

Camarillo 26, Ventura 25: Camarillo scored the final 23 points to stun the Cougars on their home field. Andy Dean - his sister Lindsey was the star softball pitcher - caught the game-winning 35-yard touchdown pass from Jeff Mathews with 59.7 seconds remaining. Dean is a star in his own right. The former offensive lineman had six catches for 201 yards. Mathews has passed for 819 yards in the last three games.

Westlake 43, Thousand Oaks 17: If you didn't already know it, the Warriors are for real. Westlake had made offense look easy, and did it again against the Lancers in the Marmonte League opener. Tavior Mowry scored on a 72-yard run and Nelson Spruce returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown to ignite a 22-point outburst over a four-minute span in the fourth quarter to slam the door shut. Mowry (of "Sister, Sister" family fame) had 135 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries. TO QB Avodre Bollar threw for 160 yards  and rushed for 69, but completed only 16 of 34 attempts with two interceptions. Rickey Minyard (sore shoulder) returned to the lineup, but was limited to 29 yards on 11 carrries.

Newbury Park 55, Simi Valley 12: RB Cameron Roberson put this one away early and gave the backups some ample playing time. The Notre-Dame bound senior rushed for 143 yards on 11 carries with three touchdowns before heading to the bench for the entire second half.

Moorpark 35, Calabasas 7: The Musketeers will never run up the score. So after taking a 35-0 halftime lead, they put things on cruise control to return from their bye week with a win. Austin Edmonson ran for two touchdowns and the Musketeers defense added two more scores to seal the win. Edmonson finished with 93 yards on 11 carries.

Royal 34, Agoura 28: Royal's defense stopped Agoura on 4th-and-2 at the 25-yard line to stop Agoura's rally. Royal led 34-14 before Agoura staged a 4th-quarter comeback attempt. Royal's Thomas Garner rushed for 101 yards on 22 carries and Cory Stevens had 105 receiving yards on only three catches.

Buena 29, Pacifica 26: The Bulldogs rebounded from last week's loss and Pacifica once again couldn't hold a lead. Buena QB Robert Munoz threw his fourth touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter and Buena made a late defensive stand to beat the Tritons.

Atascadero 29, Hueneme 21: The Vikings couldn't keep the good times rolling as they lost their first game of the season. Hueneme fell behind early - 19-0 at halftime - and couldn't stage a big enough rally to complete a comeback. The game was delayed 20 minutes when Hueneme defensive lineman Adam Kalolo was taken by ambulance to the hospital. There was no information provided on his injury.

Oaks Christian 33, Venice 13: Malcom Jones was the story as the senior running back ran for a school-record 332 yards and four touchdowns. Oaks Christian led by seven points entering the fourth quarter, but Jones scored three touchdowns as the Lions avoided losing to Venice like they did two seasons ago. Jones ran for touchdowns of 61, 39, 70 and 29 yards to likely secure Oaks Christian's bowl berth thanks to St. Bonaventure's loss. Jones will be at the UCLA-Stanford game today as he contemplates which one of the schools to choose. The winner may be the winner.

Santa Paula 43, Santa Clara 7: Special teams played a big role for Santa Paula in the win. Randall Hernandez blocked two punts - one he recovered for a safety and one he returned 41 yards for a touchdown.

An unlikely friendship

A private school adjacent to Ventura County like Oaks Christian School and a public school in Los Angeles like Venice High may seem like an unlikely series, but the two teams will play for the fourth straight season tonight.

Oaks Christian coach Bill Redell and Venice High coach Angelo Gasca met coaching the CaliFlorida Bowl in 2003 and have signed a pair of two-game series.

"He's a really good man and he's nice enough to put us on his schedule," said Gasca of Redell Friday. "I think we have a chance to keep (the series) going.

"Anytime we play a team like Oaks Christian or Venice, we're a better program for it."

Oaks Christian won 47-17 in 2006 and 42-14 in 2008, but the Gondos have the rare boon of a 41-35 win over the Lions in 2007 on their resume.

"For that team, it was incredible, especially trailing 28-9," said Gasca. "It helped us a lot. These guys don't lose very often."

Gasca also has a close relationship with Oaks Christian quarterback Nick Montana, who he has coached at a series of Air 7 summer camps.

"He's a good quarterback, in his own right, no matter who his father is," said Gasca. "He's incredible and he's only going to get better and better. He's just scratching the surface of what he can do."

Report: Jones favors UCLA over Stanford

ESPN recruiting expert Greg Biggins reported this week that Oaks Christian senior running back Malcolm Jones is leaning towards attending UCLA over Stanford, according to Oaks Christian head coach Bill Redell

"I just talked to him and he said he still likes UCLA," Oaks Christian coach Bill Redell told Biggins. "He liked Stanford and has some family pushing him there for the academics, but UCLA is where he wants to go.

"He told me a week ago he would have his decision made before October and today is the last day of September, so I know he should be getting close. If there's a family struggle going on, obviously it could take longer but as of today, he wants to go to UCLA."

I'm down in Venice for Oaks Christian's fourth game of the season tonight, so I'll attempt to get a response from Jones.
