An unlikely friendship

A private school adjacent to Ventura County like Oaks Christian School and a public school in Los Angeles like Venice High may seem like an unlikely series, but the two teams will play for the fourth straight season tonight.

Oaks Christian coach Bill Redell and Venice High coach Angelo Gasca met coaching the CaliFlorida Bowl in 2003 and have signed a pair of two-game series.

"He's a really good man and he's nice enough to put us on his schedule," said Gasca of Redell Friday. "I think we have a chance to keep (the series) going.

"Anytime we play a team like Oaks Christian or Venice, we're a better program for it."

Oaks Christian won 47-17 in 2006 and 42-14 in 2008, but the Gondos have the rare boon of a 41-35 win over the Lions in 2007 on their resume.

"For that team, it was incredible, especially trailing 28-9," said Gasca. "It helped us a lot. These guys don't lose very often."

Gasca also has a close relationship with Oaks Christian quarterback Nick Montana, who he has coached at a series of Air 7 summer camps.

"He's a good quarterback, in his own right, no matter who his father is," said Gasca. "He's incredible and he's only going to get better and better. He's just scratching the surface of what he can do."
