St. Bonaventure's bowl hopes likely went bye bye, Malcolm Jones kept Oaks Christian's right on track and Ventura was on the opposite end of a comeback this week.
More news, notes and highlights from Week 4:
Bishop Amat 24, St. Bonaventure 23 (OT): St. Bonaventure barely escaped last week in overtime against Crespi, but couldn't make it two in a row. The Seraphs felt the sting of special teams this time as they were the ones missing the extra point in overtime. Big plays were St. Bonaventure's undoing -- they gave up way too many and paid the price. It likely will cost them a bowl game bid in the end.
Camarillo 26, Ventura 25: Camarillo scored the final 23 points to stun the Cougars on their home field. Andy Dean - his sister Lindsey was the star softball pitcher - caught the game-winning 35-yard touchdown pass from Jeff Mathews with 59.7 seconds remaining. Dean is a star in his own right. The former offensive lineman had six catches for 201 yards. Mathews has passed for 819 yards in the last three games.
Westlake 43, Thousand Oaks 17: If you didn't already know it, the Warriors are for real. Westlake had made offense look easy, and did it again against the Lancers in the Marmonte League opener. Tavior Mowry scored on a 72-yard run and Nelson Spruce returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown to ignite a 22-point outburst over a four-minute span in the fourth quarter to slam the door shut. Mowry (of "Sister, Sister" family fame) had 135 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries. TO QB Avodre Bollar threw for 160 yards and rushed for 69, but completed only 16 of 34 attempts with two interceptions. Rickey Minyard (sore shoulder) returned to the lineup, but was limited to 29 yards on 11 carrries.
Newbury Park 55, Simi Valley 12: RB Cameron Roberson put this one away early and gave the backups some ample playing time. The Notre-Dame bound senior rushed for 143 yards on 11 carries with three touchdowns before heading to the bench for the entire second half.
Moorpark 35, Calabasas 7: The Musketeers will never run up the score. So after taking a 35-0 halftime lead, they put things on cruise control to return from their bye week with a win. Austin Edmonson ran for two touchdowns and the Musketeers defense added two more scores to seal the win. Edmonson finished with 93 yards on 11 carries.
Royal 34, Agoura 28: Royal's defense stopped Agoura on 4th-and-2 at the 25-yard line to stop Agoura's rally. Royal led 34-14 before Agoura staged a 4th-quarter comeback attempt. Royal's Thomas Garner rushed for 101 yards on 22 carries and Cory Stevens had 105 receiving yards on only three catches.
Buena 29, Pacifica 26: The Bulldogs rebounded from last week's loss and Pacifica once again couldn't hold a lead. Buena QB Robert Munoz threw his fourth touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter and Buena made a late defensive stand to beat the Tritons.
Atascadero 29, Hueneme 21: The Vikings couldn't keep the good times rolling as they lost their first game of the season. Hueneme fell behind early - 19-0 at halftime - and couldn't stage a big enough rally to complete a comeback. The game was delayed 20 minutes when Hueneme defensive lineman Adam Kalolo was taken by ambulance to the hospital. There was no information provided on his injury.
Oaks Christian 33, Venice 13: Malcom Jones was the story as the senior running back ran for a school-record 332 yards and four touchdowns. Oaks Christian led by seven points entering the fourth quarter, but Jones scored three touchdowns as the Lions avoided losing to Venice like they did two seasons ago. Jones ran for touchdowns of 61, 39, 70 and 29 yards to likely secure Oaks Christian's bowl berth thanks to St. Bonaventure's loss. Jones will be at the UCLA-Stanford game today as he contemplates which one of the schools to choose. The winner may be the winner.
Santa Paula 43, Santa Clara 7: Special teams played a big role for Santa Paula in the win. Randall Hernandez blocked two punts - one he recovered for a safety and one he returned 41 yards for a touchdown.
Oxnard 28, San Marcos 0: Henry Fernandez set the tone quickly by returning the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown and returning an interception 15 yards on San Marcos' first drive of the game. Fernandez rushed 12 times for 90 yards and his backfield mate Alex Gavin had 99 yards on 21 carries as the Yellowjackets won their 22nd straight regular-season game.
Fillmore 28, Carpinteria 21: Fillmore's defense stopped Carpinteria on a 4th-and-1 with the score tied 21-21 and Fillmore followed with a game-winning 98-yard scoring drive. QB Corey Cole capped the drive with a 1-yard QB sneak on fourth down to secure the victory.
Twentynine Palms 6, Oak Park 0: No offensive theatrics in this game as Oak Park was forced to use its fourth-string QB because of injuries. Tyler Benton completed only 1 of 4 passes for 8 yards. Oak Park's rushing attack collected 200 yards, but could not breach the end zone. The lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter when a blocked punt led to Michael Pinto's 12-yard score.
St. Francis 41, Rio Mesa 0: Rio Mesa's offense went dormant just one week after showing signs of life.
