St. Bonaventure football forfeits wins, league title

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The St. Bonaventure High football team has forfeited its 11 wins and Channel League title from last season for using an ineligible player.
Defensive back Troy Hill was discovered to have been a fifth-year senior.
Hill transferred to St. Bonaventure from Chaney High School in Youngstown, Ohio in January of 2007 when he moved to the area to live with his uncle.
St. Bonaventure considered Hill a freshman, but Hill had actually attended Chaney as a freshman in 2005-06.
The error in Hill's transcript was discovered by a compliance officer at the University of Oregon, where Hill had signed to play in college.
Hill's scholarship offer and NCAA playing status is now in jeopardy.

Marmonte League soccer

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Royal High boys' soccer coach Ignacio Saldain was both acceptant and upset by the Highlanders' draw in the CIF-SS Division I playoffs.
Royal finished as Marmonte League co-champions, was ranked No. 10 in the final regular-season poll -- and is headed to a matchup with No. 1 Long Beach Millikan on the road in second-round play.
That's provided Royal can survive the first round. The Highlander drew No. 12-seed Harvard Westlake.
"I don't mind playing Millikan, but not in the second round," said Saldain. "I was thinking more in the third or fourth round. But all we can do is go out and play. We'll be ready to go."
The rest of the Marmonte League also drew tough opponents to launch postseason.
Simi Valley, the other half of the league co-championship, takes on St. John Bosco. Third-place Newbury Park heads to Loyola, while Agoura will play at Mater Dei.

Twelve area hoop teams picked at large

Four boys' programs made it to the Division III-AA draw: Agoura, Buena, Hueneme and Newbury Park.

Selected to the V-AA boys' postseason is Santa Clara. which extends its consecutive playoff streak to 38 years. Villanova Prep made the field for the 5-A bracket.

Camarillo, Moorpark and Westlake were chosen for the II-A girls' basketball playoffs.

Other girls' basketball teams to be picked at large were: Calabasas, III-A; La Reina, IV-A; and Villanova, V-A

Rio Mesa, Agoura seeded in water polo

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Pacific View League champion Rio Mesa and Marmonte League champion Agoura are seeded for the Division IV and Division II girls' water polo playoffs, respectively.

Rio Mesa, the 2009 Division IV runner-up, is seeded No. 2. The Spartans will begin their postseason Thursday at home against the winner of Tuesday's wild card game between Santa Ynez and Glendale. Pacifica, the Pacific View League runner-up, drew a first round road game against La Canada.

Arroyo Grande, which defeated Rio Mesa, 9-7, in the 2009 final, is the No. 1 seed.

Agoura, which has won the Marmonte League title 11 times in the last 12 years, is seeded No. 4 in Division II. The Chargers will face either Peninsula or Mission Viejo in the first round on Thursday at home.

Hasan brothers

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Twin brothers Erik and Kyle Hasan are a motivated pair for the Simi Valley High wrestling tem.
Kyle finished second in the Marmonte League championships as a junior and erased that memory with a 9-0 verdict over defending champion Brandon Jensen of Thousand Oaks in the 191-pound league title match Saturday night.
Erik was third a year ago, but defeated Christian Beauvoir of Royal, 9-0, for the 173-pound title in this year's league meet.
Erik says the prime motivation is to reach the state championship meet.
"We both want to go to state, and that starts with winning the league championship," he said.

Royal basketball

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The Royal High boys' basketball likely won't be a playoff team later this month, but it's still been a successful season.
The program that has been consistently at the bottom of the league standings this decade is 4-8 in the Marmonte League and 11-13 overall, but has taken a big jump on the competitive scale.
Among its wins is a 59-50 verdict over crosstown rival Simi Valley. The Highlanders have had several near misses, including a 50-48 loss to Calabasas.
Matt Padavick and Sam Schaefer are among the Top 10 in the county in scoring, at 16.9 and 16.8 points respectively.
Royal has a chance to cost Simi Valley third place in league when it hosts the Pioneers on Thursday night.

Westlake basketball

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The strangest aspect to Simi Valley's surprisingly lopsided 61-34 victory over the Westlake High boys' basketball team Tuesday night was the cold performance by the Warriors' scorers.
Top scorers Joseph Detweiler and Devon Silber were each averaging over 11 points per game, and combined for zero points in the loss.
Nine turnovers and one offensive foul in the first quarter seemed to send the Warriors reeling.
Westlake and Simi Valley are now tied for third place, but Simi Valley owns the tiebreaker by virtue of a two-game sweep.

Great environment for basketball

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The walls of the Pacifica High gym were pulsating from the sounds of dueling cheers last night during the boys' basketball game between rivals Pacifica and Oxnard.

Each time the packed Pacifica side would explode with encouragement for the Tritons, the equally-jammed Oxnard side would counter for their Yellowjackets.

The standing-room only crowd included students, parents and administrators from both schools and they were treated to the usual close contest between the teams with Oxnard emerging with a 55-49 victory.

It seemed like the entire city of Oxnard attended the game, not as much to escape the rain as to witness what has become a great rivalry in every sense.

The chants and good-natured taunts continued until the very end, when, despite a warning, some Oxnard students rushed the court to celebrate with their players.

"This environment was so crazy," Oxnard head coach Jeff Staniland said. "There is no better environment than what you saw here tonight. No matter where you go in the country you are not going to get better than this."

Stay tuned to Channel League girls' baketball race

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Santa Barbara High has been a major thorn in the side of the Buena and Ventura girls' basketball teams this season.

Both teams have suffered Channel League losses against the Dons, including Ventura's 52-51 loss last night on a free throw by Jackie Kerns with 0.7 seconds remaining.

It marks the first time Santa Barbara (20-5, 6-1) has defeated Buena (16-8, 5-1) and Ventura (21-3, 4-2) in the same season since 2003, and makes the Channel League race much more interesting entering the final week.

Buena and Ventura meet on Monday night at Buena High. If Ventura beats Buena, Santa Barbara will claim at least a share of its first Channel League title since 1988.

If Buena wins, it will come down to Wednesday night's winner-take-all showdown between Buena and Santa Barbara at Buena High in the final regular-season game.

DiPoalo sticks with USC

St. Bonaventure High senior lineman Giovanni DiPoalo signed his letter of intent to play football at USC this morning.

DiPoalo had verbally committed to USC, but re-opened his recruitment after Pete Carroll left USC to take the head coaching job with the NFL's Seattle Seahawks.

But new USC coach Lane Kiffin and his staff were able to do enough to convince DiPoalo the Trojan family was the best place for him to be.

DiPoalo was considering heading across town to UCLA, but will be donning a cardinal red and gold uniform after all.
