The Cornerstone Christian boys' baseball team set the county record for consecutive wins on Monday by winning its 29th straight with a 20-4 victory over Pilgrim.
Cornerstone broke Rio Mesa's streak of 28 straight victories, which the Spartans set in 1980-81.

Senior center fielder Amber Sanders had a two-RBI double in the fourth inning and the game-winning RBI single in the sixth inning as the Royal High softball team opened Marmonte League play with a key 4-3 win over crosstown rivals Simi Valley Tuesday afternoon.
Pitcher Nancy Bowling struck out 10 to improve to 4-1.
Royal (4-1, 1-0) and Simi Valley (4-1, 0-1) entered the league opener a combined 7-1.
Taylor Cartwright had RBI singles in the first and third innings to stake the Pioneers to a 2-0 lead. Calli Grant was 1 for 2, scored twice and had a stolen base.
Camarillo boys' volleyball coach Rob Vandermay brought team outside and told them not to come back into the gym until they were ready to play.
And his Scorpions responded by taking the final two games of a five-game thriller with visiting Ventura Tuesday night, 25-21, 25-27, 15-25, 25-19, 15-11.
"I was proud of the way they responded," said Vandermay.
Danny Reilly had 15 kills and five blocks, Christian VanOuwerkerk and Connor Hoybjerg had eight kills apiece, Jesse Flitt had 40 assists and Jose Rojas had 10 digs for Camarillo (9-2), which gained a measure of revenge against the team which won its Camarillo tournament.
Tylour Mullaney and Kevin Tanner had 15 assists apiece for Ventura (8-2), which was without starting setter Zach Svenson. Michael Henchy and Dustin Neary had 10 kills apiece.
Julian Ramon spurred a five-run first inning with a two-run home run and Mikel Beltran scattered five hits to earn his third win as the Oxnard High baseball team stayed atop the Pacific View League standings with a 7-5 win over visiting Camarillo Tuesday afternoon.
Anthony Alvarez was 2 for 2 with two runs scored and J.R. Baneulos was 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Yellowjackets (7-2, 3-0).
"It's a great start," said Oxnard coach Al Tarazon. "But it doesn't mean a hill of beans unless you take care of business on Thursday."
Camarillo, which hosts Oxnard Thursday afternoon, pulled within 5-4 with a four-run third inning highlighted by Taylor Hansen's three-run home run.
Kevin Minjares was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored and Andy Yingling was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run for Camarillo (7-2, 2-1).
The best matchup in high school baseball this spring might not necessarily involve team vs. team.
It could be player vs. player, with the compelling matchup featuring Westlake's standout hitter Christian Yelich vs. Royal's star pitcher Cody Buckel.
The two will likely hook up March 24, when Royal visits Westlake in a key Marmonte League match.
Yelich, a third baseman/first baseman, has already signed with the University of Miami, but could be selected in the early round in the Major League draft in June. Ditto for Buckel, who has signed with Pepperdine but might have to choose between college and signing a professional contract.
For the Oaks Christian School girls and boys basketball teams, berths in the CIF-State basketball tournament were well received.
They also necessitated some scrambling.
Andre Chevalier, the girls head coach, said his team suspected its season was over when it lost in the semifinals of the CIF-SS Division IV-A playoffs to St. Joseph on Feb. 27.
"It wasn't until the following Monday that we heard it was a possibility," he said. "So we were able to go back to practicing.
The Lions ended up with 11 days between games. Oaks Christian lost to host Bishop Montgomery on Tuesday night in the opening round of the state playoffs, 79-58.
The Oaks Christian boys won their first round game at host Kingsburg on Tuesday, 72-50, but faced a different kind of challenge in preparing for the state playoffs.
Oaks Christian lost to Alemany in the quarterfinals of the Division IV-A playoffs, and largely assumed its season was over. Some players joined their club teams, which rendered them ineligible to compete in the state tournament.
Oaks Christian plays powerhouse Price High on Thursday night.
Todd Sandell of Somis, who was a member of the Camarillo High baseball team that won a CIF-Southern Section championship in 2002, has signed a professional contract with Lincoln, Neb. Saltdogs.
Sandell also played for Fresno State University.
Four area teams survived the first round of the CIF Southern California Regional playoffs and will play in the second round on Thursday night.
In Division III girls, Buena plays at top-seeded Santa Margarita at 6 p.m. and fourth-seeded Agoura hosts Bishop Amat at 7 p.m.
In Division IV boys, Oaks Christian plays at top-seeded Price at 7.
In Division V boys, Besant Hill is at Windward at 7.
Despite 29 points from Brianna Barrett, Oaks Christian lost to Bishop Montgomery, 79-58, Tuesday night in the first round of the Division IV girls' basketball Southern California Regionals on the road.
With Besant Hill's Ivan Matip whistled for his second foul with 1:45 left in the first quarter, Sierra Hill went to Michael Cohen, who scored the final two baskets in a 6-0 run to take an 18-12 lead,
The CIF-SS basketball finals schedule has been released for this weekend. The Agoura High girls and Besant Hill boys are the area teams still remaining with a shot at a title. If you want to attend, here is when they play:
- CIF-SS Division V-A Boys: Sierra Canyon vs. Besant Hill, Friday March 5 at 8:15 p.m. at Colony High School (Ontario).
- CIF-Division III-AA Girls: Agoura vs. Inglewood, Saturday March 6 at 11:15 a.m. at The Walter Pyramid (on the campus of Long Beach State).
