Compiled from staff reports.

SCORES

Oaks Christian 36, St. Bonaventure 24
Brandon Dawkins, making his first start at quarterback for the Lions, passed for 177 yards and accounted for two touchdowns, and sophomore receiver Chris Davis caught seven passes for 98 yards and the game's decisive score after a determined Seraphs' rally.

Westlake 38, Thousand Oaks 6
Defensive end Johnny Stuart and nose guard Kenneth AhChing returned to restore Ventura County's best defensive line to full strength and Westlake unleashed its full force to feast on host Thousand Oaks.

Ventura 35, Nordhoff 20
Conner Armstrong ran for three touchdowns and amassed 171 yards on 23 carries to power the Cougars.

Oxnard 42, Buena 35
Oxnard players and fans honored their injured teammate with stickers on the back of their helmets that read "A.P." and included his number "25." What meant the most to Oxnard players though was providing a 42-35 win over visiting Buena High in a game dedicated to Adrian Padilla.

Moorpark 48, Newbury Park 12
Newbury Park's first drive went sour fast when Jordan Guerrero intercepted a pass from Ben Okun and returned it 45 yards to give Moorpark (2-1, 1-1) a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.

Simi Valley 35, Agoura 0
Host Simi Valley blanked hapless Agoura, putting its record at 3-0 overall and 2-0 in league, even though it changed head coaches just six weeks ago.  Quarterback Jake Maranto threw for 250 yards and four touchdowns -- two of them to Eric Pinkston -- to lead the victory over Agoura (0-3, 0-2), which has been outscored 123-11 this season.

Royal 31, Calabasas 10
Codey Mann rushed for 199 yards on 26 carries and scored two touchdowns to help lead Royal. Mann scored both touchdowns in the second quarter on consecutive carries.

Canyon 52, Camarillo 28
Camarillo linebacker Sperling Jameson was taken off the field by an ambulance. He appeared to be moving his arms and legs. We'll have updates on his condition at vcspreps.com when they become available.

Fillmore 59, Frazier Mountain 30
This game was delayed due to lightning and inclement weather.

Bishop Diego 42, Santa Paula 14
Santa Paula's Steven Kohr ran for two touchdowns, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 35-0 deficit in the third quarter.

Paraclete 57, Oak Park 15
Paraclete got the best of the Eagles defense, putting together a 472-yard running night. The Spirit (3-1) were led by Frankie Ramirez, who ran for 168 yards on 10 carries, while Antoyne Hutcherson tallied 140 yards on just four carries.

Campbell Hall 37, Grace Brethren 7
Grace Brethren High couldn't contain quarterback RJ Gordon and Campbell Hall's up-tempo offense. After both teams went three-and-out to start the game, Gordon led the onslaught of offensive prowess for Campbell against Brethren's struggling defensive effort.

Mission Prep 21, Villanova Prep 16

Golden Valley 17, Channel Islands 10
Channel Islands tied the game at 10-10 in the third quarter, but Golden Valley took a 17-10 lead minutes later. The Raiders drove to the Golden Valley 4-yard late in the fourth quarter but were denied a game-tying touchdown.

Rio Mesa 16, Santa Barbara 13
Jordan Nunnery's late touchdown capped Rio Mesa's victory, as the Spartans rallied in the fourth quarter after a 35-minute weather delay awkwardly forced both teams to the Peabody Stadium locker rooms in the middle of a pivotal second-half drive.

San Marcos 24, Hueneme 0
In an electrifying start to the first game on its new turf field and renamed stadium, San Marcos' Andrew Thayer returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown to ignite the Royals. The game was called with 3:15 remaining in the fourth quarter after thunder rumbled through the area.

Santa Clara 21, King City 21

This time, Ventura wary of Wrout

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Tanner Wrout won't be sneaking up on the Ventura High football team tonight.

After missing last year's season opener, Rio Mesa High's battering ram of a running back crashed onto the scene last year against Ventura, piling up 254 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns in a 55-41 loss.

"I expect it'll be a little different bit of a game tonight," said Rio Mesa coach Bob Gregorchuk Friday. "Last year, Tanner Wrout was unknown to them. We had a little secret weapon there

"They know who our weapons are now. We don't have that element of surprise."

In his junior debut, Wrout carried 11 times for 157 yards and two touchdowns and caught two passes for 97 yards and two more scores. The 6-foot, 195-pound back went on to rush for 1,151 yards and 10 touchdowns on just 125 carries, an average of 9.21 yards per attempt.

The Cougars may be better prepared tonight for the showdown of unbeaten Channel League and Pacific View League contenders, but that doesn't mean they'll be able to stop him.

"Wrout is something else," said Ventura coach Brad Steward Friday. "He's a phenomenal player. It's going to be hard to contain him."

Wrout had 116 yards and two scores on 14 carries in the Spartans 44-7 win over San Marcos Sept. 9. His backfield partner, Jordan Nunnery, who Steward called "greased" lightning, added 130 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries and a 65-yard punt return.

"That game was over by halftime," said Steward. "This is a really good matchup for this week. I think they are one of the better teams in the Western Division, at least from Ventura County, and we could be as well."

Steward may only be comfortable with Rio Mesa's ground game when his team has the ball.

"We're going to have to have long, sustained drives, hopefully that'll keep their offensive off the field," said Steward. "We're going to have to drive the ball to do it."

The top matchup may be Ventura's young offensive line against Rio Mesa's athletic defense and its aggressive 3-3 stack scheme, which features linebacker Mitchell Haerterich and rover James Turner.

"They're very active with their linebackers blitzing and moving around," said Steward. "A lot will be determined by how we handle that."

Ventura struggled up front at times during its 34-16 win at Pacifica Sept. 2, but showed significant improvement in last week's 38-0 win over Agoura.

"Their O line is coming along," said Gregorchuk. "They showed improvement. They've got two games under their belt, while we have one. They got a whole week better from Week 1 to Week 2 and they'll be another week better tonight."

More Marmonte football

The matchup between Newbury Park and Simi Valley could turn out to be significant in the Marmonte League. The two teams appear much improved after winning their league openers. Neither team will win the league championship, but it does help set the pecking order for the league's second tier.

Marmonte football

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The best matchup for the Mamonte League openers tonight pits Thousand Oaks vs. host Moorpark. The two teams played a dramatic contest a year ago, with Thousand Oaks pulling out a 29-28 victory in overtime. Both teams have high hopes for a playoff berth and/or league title.
The game within a game features Moorpark QB Grant Rohach vs. the Lancers' secondary. Thousand Oaks has athletes back there, led by Blake Howell.

Excitement doubled for Lins

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Moorpark High football coach Tim Lins has two reasons to be excited for the weekend.
His Musketeers open Marmonte League play against Thousand Oaks on Friday night, and on Saturday Lins is being inducted into the Cal Lutheran Athletics Hall of Fame.
Lins arrived at CLU from Cerritos College in 1980 as a tight end. During the 1981 and 1982 seasons, he caught 77 passes, scored 12 touchdowns and accumulated 974 yards to help CLU capture back-to-back NAIA District 3 Championships.
Lins was named to the NAIA All-America First Team both years and is one of only three two-time NAIA All-America First Team selections in CLU's history.
But here's betting the humble and modest Lins has never told his players about his outstanding college career. Bragging is not his specialty. But winning sure is - as a player and a coach.

We've got 12 games tonight, and we'll have updates and coverage from all the games here, at our scoreboard and on Twitter. New to the Star this season is our web broadcast of the Game of the Week, today we're streaming Nordhoff vs. Pacifica.

Compiled from staff reports.

FINAL:

St. Bonaventure 29, Corona Centennial 27
The one-two backfield punch of Shaun Wick and junior Zach Green combined for 225 yards rushing, receiver Jordan Farris impressed in a debut littered with big plays and Therrien's decision to attempt a two-point conversion with less than five minutes to play worked as the Seraphs (1-0) defeated the defending CIF Division I bowl finalists.

Pacifica 60, Nordhoff 56

Pacifica's Dennis Taylor dashed 15 yards for the final touchdown in a wild victory over visiting Nordhoff. Michael Maldonado had a 45-yard interception return for the Tritons (1-1) to seal a game which featured 11 lead changes. Maldonado had seven receptions for 160 yards.

Camarillo 20, Buena 15
Host Camarillo, led by sophomore quarterback Michael Marin's 178 yards and two touchdowns held off Buena.

Santa Clara 35, Hueneme 34
Santa Clara's Andrew Rodriguez, a 5-foot-9 junior, booted a 41-yard field goal with no time remaining as the Saints rallied from nine points down in the final seven minutes to capture their season opener.

Ventura 38, Agoura 0
Just two weeks into the high school season, Ventura looked in peak form Friday night. Rodney Stanley completed 13 of 19 passes for 271 yards and one touchdown, Armstrong rushed for 81 yards and four touchdowns and Hunter Winans and Nick Rudolph each went over 100 yards in receptions as Ventura overwhelmed host Agoura

Channel Islands 23, Oak Park 7
The Raiders (2-0) rode running back Richard Gray all the way to their second win in as many weeks as the junior pounded out 233 yards on 23 carries, including a 53-yard touchdown scamper in third quarter for the final score of the game.

Royal 27, Golden Valley 14
Codey Mann gave the Royal offense the jump-start it needed. Rushing 22 times for 167 yards, Mann scored two second-half touchdowns, leading Royal to a victory in its season opener.

Rio Mesa 44, San Marcos 7
Coach Bob Gregorchuk's Spartans thoroughly dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage, making 17 first downs to the Royals' one and outgaining them 369 yards to 82.

Calabasas 16, Granada Hills 12
Tyson Jones capped off a four-play, 50-yard drive with a 1-yard scoring run with 7:55 remaining in the game.

Quartz Hill 42, Oxnard 13
Unable to stop Quartz Hill's running game and repeatedly struggling to cover kickoffs, Oxnard gave up three touchdowns in the final 2:11 of the first half and lost the opener for both teams.

Viewpoint 44, Villanova Prep 24
Villanova Prep fell into an early hole and could never recover, losing to host Viewpoint in a non-league game on Friday. Viewpoint (1-1) jumped out to a 22-0 lead in the first half and never allowed Villanova (0-2) to gain a big momentum swing.

Crescenta Valley 40, Santa Paula 32
Senior running back Marro Lee and quarterback Zac Wilkerson, along with a 21-point first-quarter scoring blitz was just enough to staff off a rallying Santa Paula High, as Crescenta Valley prevailed, to open its season with a victory and snap a five-game losing skid in the process.

St. Bonaventure heads east, Evans to start

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Despite competing through fall camp with senior Nick Arbuckle, senior Marc Evans will start tonight as the St. Bonaventure High football team visits powerhouse Corona Centennial.

Evans, who threw 30 touchdowns and just six interceptions as a junior, Evans won the job with his performance in last week's scrimmage against Chaminade.

"It was a battle," said St. Bonaventure High coach Todd Therrien. "They rotated in the scrimmage, but I'm not big on rotating quarterbacks during a season.

The multitalented Arbuckle will still be a big contributor for the Seraphs in a number of positions, including tight end.

St. Bonaventure travels east to face one of Southern California's top programs. The Huskies have won six CIF titles since 2000, plus the 2008 state championship. It lost to Palo Alto, 15-13, in the rain-swept CIF Division I state bowl last December.

The game is of added significance considering it is the lone non-league game of the schedule for St. Bonaventure.

"We want to go out and put up a good performance," said Therrien . "We were rooting for Oaks Christian and Westlake last week. We definitely want to make our conference look good."

The Seraphs took advantage of this position a year ago, in the first year of the 10-team Marmonte League, when it traveled south and blitzed Long Beach Poly, 32-7.

"After all the preseason stuff when it was said that we were going to finish fourth or fifth in league, I thought it gave us a little confidence," said Therrien. "We're definitely repping the 805 in this game. I think there's a lot of support out there for us (today)."

"I don't know what's going to happen," said Therrien. "I told people it's going to look a little like 'Friday Night Lights.' ... They're going to outweight us at every single spot. We just have to go out there and play."

Centennial returns four offensive linemen from the team that rushed for 5,000 yards last year, including 6-foot-4, 330-pound Lio Lafaele, 6-foot-6, 310-pound Anthony Juarez and 6-foot-2, 290-pound Viane Talamaivao,

"This game is going to be physical with a capital 'P,' " said Therrien. "Their offensive line is bigger than most NCAA Division I offensive lines."

St. Bonaventure does have an issue on defense. Junior strong safety Paul Thompson could be out as long as six weeks with an elbow injury. Beyond losing one of the team's better playmakers, the injury also means senior running back Shawn Wick will have to play defense full-time.

"No break for Wick," said Therrien.

Grace Brethren game canceled

The Grace Brethren football game against Annenberg on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Moorpark College has been canceled. Annenberg informed Grace Brethren on Wednesday night it would not be coming.

Buena hires Duran

Tisha Duran is heading back to her old stomping grounds.
The Buena High graduate has been hired to coach her alma mater's softball team. Duran was an all-Channel League player at Buena before heading to Ventura College, where she was an all-WSC standout. Duran finished her softball career at UC Santa Barbara, where she earned all-Big West Conference honors.
Duran has been serving as an assistant coach at Ventura College for the last few years and giving private lessons.
"We had three great candidates, and Tisha really stood out," Buena athletic director Craig Williams said. "We are glad to have Tisha as our coach. She has so much passion."

The play of the quarterbacks might be the most interesting facet to the opening week of the high school football season. Only a handful of quarterbacks return from last year, including Marc Evans of St. Bonaventure and Grant Rohach of Moorpark. Otherwise, a number of players are talented but inexperienced. How they play might be the key to their teams this season.
