Democracy In Iran

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Since the weekend, stories have flooded the media about protests going on in Iran. The protests concern the result of presidential elections there. Incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is reported to have won in a landslide but many do not believe it and think he stole the election. Protestors are being arrested and events are being subdued by Iranian security forces.

The whole situation reminds me of the 2000 presidential election in which George W. Bush won. Now in that case, there was no voter fraud but there was wide voter discontent. The difference from then and now though is that we did not stage any large scale protests like what is going on in Iran. Why was that? It seems that Iranians appreciate democracy more than we do. We, Americans, have become complacent with our lives that we do not stand up for what we want to believe in.

We also don't live in a society that kill Bahai's and Homosexuals as a matter of state policy, nor do we follow clerics to suicidal ends.
and quite frankly - deep down, we knew that even though we might not have agreed with the outcome; the counts were accurate.
This "election" in Iran seems to have been rigged like those in Chicago during mayor Daily's (the elder) reign. Seems to be plain and simple election theft.
Daniel, do you still believe that Gore won in Florida?

It's time we face it; Iran is an uncivilized pig-stye as are most muslin countries. They don't know how civilized people act and whats more they don't care.

The sooner we get all our troops out of the region and let kill each other off the better. Just let them know one thing; you come to a civilized country and kill a single person and we will bomb you until no stone sits on top of another.

It's time Uncle Sam defines JIHAD for those stupid b@stards.

Mister consistent strikes again. A man who displays ignorance and sees violence as the best solution for everything.

Great job IMAHAINGTTIA.

I have to agree with Brian Leshon. The response for IMMADASHELL is not very civilized itself. What makes you any different from the Iranians that you call pigs and uncivilized?

I know i call my blog propaganda but I do my best to keep a level head about my posts.

muslim terrorist love your liberal drivel. Sit on your thumbs and do nothing hoping they'll follow your lead. For 30 years they've been laughing at you and spreading their reign of terror and death. They understand one thing only and that is you don't mess with someone who will kill you.

Bush II made the same mistake in the mideast that his dad did; he fought half a war and then quit when the bleeding hearts and sob-sister started crying and moaning. Now we'll have to wait until they attack us again and see if the President at that time has the b_lls to do the job right.

Since o-BAAAA-ma a muslim himself I hope it doesn't happen on his watch.

Daniel,

Thank you for calling out that comment that treated all Muslims as the same. There are religious extremists in Iran and they certainly are dangerous. But there are millions in the streets who share many values and hopes with Americans. For someone to say they are all the same is disgusting.

Of course what can we expect from someone that thinks you can inherit being a Muslim?

Well...first, I think it might be a bit of a reach to assert there was no voter fraud in the 2000 American Presidential election. I'm not really sure what happened, but I don't think the verdict is clear either way. Certainly the verdict of a heavily partisan Supreme Court is an issue.

"ImMadAsHellAndImNotGoingToTakeItAnymore" is way past beyond over the top. This poster is in a place that most Americans are not. I'd advocate deleting those posts, but on the other hand behavior like that probably needs to be exposed and would not likely pass muster in the light of day.

Perhaps the best thing to do with commentary like that is to leave it out there for the mainstream to judge for what it is. A tough call.

Ok...that aside.

I'd agree with you Daniel...Americans, so complacent and content, do not appreciate the great gift they have...and clearly some people, as this Iranian insurgency demonstrates, perhaps more closely cherish what democratic ideals are about.

What I get out of this is that Iran, and Iranians are not hardly a part of any "Axis of Evil". I'd guess that many Iranians, while proud of their country, disagree with where is has been going lately...all the more reason to open up dialog with them.

I’m wondering if “ImMadAsHellAndImNotGoingToTakeItAnymore” display of ignorance and hatred of our Muslims and liberals may come from a culture created by a far right media. I hear the right wing media talking points coming from family and friends and now in “ImMadAsHellAndImNotGoingToTakeItAnymore” I often hear messages of hatred and doom for our country from what I though were reasonable people. Kind of scary and not sure what to say when I disagree with them. Any suggestions on how to have a civil debate without risk of being gunned down?

Republicans and fascists in general are cowards. Greedy ignorant sadistic cowards.
There is very little chance of reasoning with them. They are tyrants.

For instance our governor is having allot of success attacking our children, the sick, and the elderly right now. This is when the Republicans are brave.

When the men and women show up at the voting booths is when it's the Republicans turn to be scared. That day is coming for all of them.
