This week’s California: The Alpha State

We talk quite a bit on my radio show about forced giving – taxes. This week we spent some time talking about those who give voluntarily, the people and businesses who choose to support our community through various non-profit organizations.

Join us as Hugh Ralston, President and CEO of the Ventura County Community Foundation and Dave Smith, President and CEO of the United Way of Ventura County discuss the current state of charitable giving, the impact of taxes, the Internet and natural disasters on our decisions to give and how things are likely to change in the future.

"Forced giving"? How about "paying your share for the things you use"? Or perhaps you have a private hospital, your own carpool lanes wherever you go, a stable of police officers, detectives, and firefighters, a labful of scientists, forest managers.....

Whether or not you think it's a good idea or not, it is forced - not optional.

Then I supposed "forced" could be used to describe our duties at work, all the ways we care for our children and pets, maintaining our vehicles and homes, etc. After all, we are not required to have kids or keep our possessions in good working order. But to accrue the benefits (e.g., earning a paycheck, not having a sick and hungry child), certain efforts are required on our part.

Paying taxes is legally required, it is not optional - so it is forced. We can debate wether or not we think that is a good thing, or the best way to deliver the services you mention. But, I was simply pointing out that it is forced - which it is by law - and that charitable giving is optional - not forced.
