Before coming to the Star's Web site, Mandy McCarthy spent years in the Hollywood trenches working for the Entertainment News Wire. She keeps in touch with all her old "contacts" and can still dish up a steamin' heap 'o' gossip at a moments notice. If you got some dirt, go ahead and give her a shout via email.

November 01, 2005 -  Best TV Show You May Not Be Watching

I have become mad obsessed over UPN's "Veronica Mars" The ironic part of it was last year, I never really paid that much attention to watching it because of the hours I keep at the office at night I only recently got TiVo but have yet to figure out how to work it and we won't even discuss how my VCR decided to die the first time I started trying to tape the episodes and have yet to replace the VCR. I had made the decision to just forgo trying to figure out how to watch the show on TV and just wait for the DVDs. The day the first season was released, I was at my neighborhood Target picking up my very own copy--that's how eager I was to see this show in all its glory. I had been hearing from critics and fellow reporters in the entertainment industry just how good this show was and how it was being overlooked by the general public. Even "Buffy's" Joss Whedon posted his love for the show

Even "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"'s Joss Whedon posted his love for the show

After two marathon-long weekends of staying up until 4 or 5 in the morning watching episode after episode, I now know what he and everyone else meant. From the moment Veronica Mars started talking, I was instantly drawn in. I could not stop watching and wanted to find out every little detail that led up to the big mystry of who killed Lily Kane, Veronica's best friend. Even though I knew who the killer eventually turned out to be, watching the episodes allowed me to look for clues I may not have caught. The acting, the plotlines and the one-liners (especially the ones given to and delivered by Jason Dohring who plays Logan Echolls. I still have the line "Annoy, tiny blonde one. Annoy like the wind!" stuck in my head from the episode "An Echolls Family Christmas.")

This show is the cream of the crop in terms of what is currently on the airwaves and easily tops my list of the five best television programs on the air. Rob Thomasis an absolute genius! I cannot stress that enough. I am now so hooked on the show that even though I still cannot view the episodes on its new night on Wednesdays, I still read the boards and various websites devoted to the show to try and find out what happened. I just happened to catch a repeat of last week's episode on UPN Sunday night so I was able to get my Veronica fix.

For those interested, Alyson Hannigan, Willow on "Buffy" will be making a return appearance on "Veronica Mars" at the end of the month and Joss Whedon, himself, is making a rare acting appearance alongside Kristen Bell who plays Veronica Mars in next week's episode. He plays a car salesman who gives Veronica some information on the big mystery surrounding the show this season.

Now comes the hard part. Waiting for the second season of the show to be released on DVD so I can have another marathon long session of late nights watching the show on my portable DVD player--only this time I will have over 40 episodes and now just 22 to contend with. I just hope there will be some cast commentaries or behind the scenes features of the show as bonus material for the DVD box set. In the meantime, I will console myself by watching and rewatching the first season over and over again and look for clues I still may have missed the first time around.

What are your thoughts on this show?
