Annika leaving and Torrey getting ready
Annika Sorenstam announced today she is going to retire after this season is over. Like most golf fans, I'm a little disappointed Sorenstam has decided she's had enough. Based on her recent win, she's still got the game to compete with anyone on the LPGA Tour, including Lorena Ochoa.
I realize she is getting married and wants to start a family but she could do that and still play. She claim she will be able to turn her back on competition without easing away from it. I hope she is right for her sake, but most athletes really struggle with that my guess is that she will the same.
Got a chance to play Torrey Pines yesterday at U.S. Open media day. It's going to be a great test of golf. I will be surprised in the winning score is under par, even with Tiger having played so well at Torrey Pines throughout the years. The course is in great shape and the rough is going to be really challenging.

Youth is served
Great to see Southern California golfer Anthony Kim pick up his first PGA Tour win. During the CBS broadcast, Nick Faldo said a great golfer usually comes along every 10 years. Kim is 10 years younger than Tiger, so maybe the former Palm Springs resident will be the next great one. He has a certain swagger to his game but I think he also realizes how hard the PGA Tour is.
Locally, there's a lot going on in golf. Tomorrow is Olivas Links' anniversary so they are holding the "Pay what it's worth" promotion. You play and than pay what you feel the rouunbd was worth. I think it's a next idea, and could be an eye opener in light of call the complaints about the course.
Today (Monday) some of the top high school teams are playing in the CIF regionals at Soule Park. I will have coverage of it in tomorrow's Star. The CIF individuals are next Monday at at Sterling Hills. If you want to see some of the stars of tomorrow, try to get out and see some of the action.
Next Monday is also US Open media day at Torrey Pines. We get to talk to USGA officials, the defending champion and then go out and get beat up by the golf course. Myself and sports editor Jon Catalini are going to go. Jon is a pretty good golfer, so he will probably handle the course a little better than I will.
I'll let you know how it turns out
