A Rio School District teacher has asked District Attorney Greg Totten to investigate an alleged violation of the Education Code because the president of the local California Teachers Association chapter sent an e-mail to fellow teachers about the race for state superintendent of public instruction.
The allegation is fairly silly on its face -- teachers can sent e-mails to each other -- but the letter to Totten does provide some embarrassing information for the CTA because the e-mail is attached to it. The e-mail spills the beans about CTA's internal polling, which reveals that state Sen. Gloria Romero is leading the CTA-endorsed candidate, Assemblyman Tom Torlakson, among teachers.
The superintendent's race is virtually certain to carry over into the fall because it would be nearly impossible for any candidate to claim a majority next week because of a crowded ballot that includes three serious candidates.
The question is which two will advance to November. It would be a major embarrassment to the state's most politcally powerful union if its candidate didn't even make it to the runoff.

Timm,
Will you post the email?
I, too would like to see the email. Totten, and the CDE should be investigating Rio School District not only for Brown Act violations, but also for Education and Code of Ethics violations from the Trustees.
The Trustees continue to cancel "regular" meeting for "special" meetings, so they can aviod public comments regarding the issues taking place with the administration. The Board President, Blaylock, has continuously abused his position by having the superintendant impose the teachers to encourage the kids to enroll in the Boys and Girls Club (BGC) to fill their quota. I also noticed that right next to the Board chambers, there's a rack filled with brochures including the BGC schedule. On the inside cover of the schedule, you'll see Blaylock's picture because he's their executive director.
Totten should also have very good insights, and possibly has a conflict of interest with Rio School District, because his wife works for them. How does that work?

Well, I guess CTA doesn't have to be embarrased now that Torlakson has moved ahead in the race, huh? I don't understand why an organization would be embarassed about losing a political campaign, or educating it's members regarding a political candidate. Maybe the Rio School Board should try a little old fashioned embarassment regarding their Superintendent Cotterell and her conviction for stealing shoes from TJ Maxx.
