Can we get a dog park?
Please? Don't let Thousand Oaks beat us at anything!
Update: You can ask park Board Member Kate O'Brien directly by clicking here.

Dog parks are a fairly recent phenomenon in this area. Can someone explain why these are necessary? What were dog owners doing before dog parks? Does the City of Simi Valley have plans for a dog park? If so, where?

One reason is that as cities grow government regulations also grow.
So, growing Simi Valley has limited the places companions can go for a walk together where the four legged fellows can run.
I have leashed my dogs and jogged before but sometimes they just feel like running.
Trails are limited. Parks are limited. Open space gets bought by government agencies ( which limits its options) or is developed.
Have you ever been to the Thousand Oaks dog park? It is amazing watching all the pups socialize and play.

ps- Barbra, any update on a timetable for the new dogpark?
Brian,
I'll get back to you on the date...

Just wondering if there is any new update on the dog park in Simi Valley? Do they know when it will be finished. Is there someone I can contact regarding this?

Posted by: a. johnson at August 1, 2007 8:33 PMWhere's our dog park? I'm tired of driving to Thousand Oaks. I'd rather be putting the gas money in the dog park donation box. Dogs get along better when they have exercise and socialize in non-territorial places (i.e. dog parks).
Posted by: Suzanne at August 21, 2007 12:25 PMYes, I too would like a dog park in simi valley. Are there any plans for one ?
Posted by: Michele Stern at October 17, 2007 11:14 AMPlease get on the city council to complete and open the dog park in Lost Canyons. I am tired of going to Thousand Oaks dog park. How long is this going to take?
Posted by: Cay at January 23, 2008 6:59 AMI contacted the Rancho Simi Parks Dept. on January 31, 2008. I was told that the land that the developer gave to the city for the dog park has not been conveyed to the city yet. They cannot begin construction until the developer conveyes the land. Hopefully they will begin contruction in the summer or fall of 2008 (according to the parks dept.).
Posted by: Jeannine at January 31, 2008 1:39 PMThe first 'phase' (water main run) is proceeding as of April 2008. Should be a nice park with two areas -- one for small dogs & one for large. Parking for 60 cars (ballparks are close by) water for the dogs and grass.
The biggest thing missing will be lights which means the park will close at dusk -- 5 pm in the winter. Some dog owners are calling the park & rec (it's NOT the city)at 584-4400 and voicing their views, others are going to the web site and e mailing www.rsrpd.org. Some will go to board meetings (the 1st & 3rd Thursday starting at 6:30pm sharp at 1692 Sycamore) and make a brief statement at the start of the meeting. As of today, this Thursday May 1 is the next board meeting.

Now finally I political issue I feel encouraged to get involved. My dog loves to run free and play. I used to take him to the Thousand Oaks dog park but now with my 9 month old son it's just too far to go often. I can take him in the simi hills but he may surprise someone on the trail. Same goes for any other area in town. Where am I supposed to take him off the leash?? People who are afraid of dogs should know early socialization off the leash will help prevent bites in the dogs adult life. My dog is super friendly with all people and dogs and he stays out of the street so I don't need a fancy fenced in park. I just need somewhere it's OK. If I had to pay a membership to help with costs it would be well worth it. Who can I write to or call to help get a dog park here?
