W. on global warming

From People Magzine...

(People Magazine): Do you think Gore is right on global warming?

( George W. Bush) I think we have a problem on global warming. I think there is a debate about whether it's caused by mankind or whether it's caused naturally, but it's a worthy debate. It's a debate, actually, that I'm in the process of solving by advancing new technologies, burning coal cleanly in electric plants, or promoting hydrogen-powered automobiles, or advancing ethanol as an alternative to gasoline.

Now that the President is on board that something needs to be done, will more people support making changes now? The side effects could be economic stimulus, cars that we can sell around the world ( American cars don't meet emission standards in China), increased cooperation with our allies, and maintaining our position as a leader in global technology.

The alternative could be so much worse.

Man liberals should stop whining about their latest fashin craze. They lost the presidential election get over it! Dubya has common sense environmental ideas. Since he has taken over the doom and gloom crowd has been working overtime yet the environment is doing fine.

"Common sense," Albert Einstein is reported to have said "is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen."

Thank you for making my point. Tree Huggers love to call names and be all gloom and doom because they are prejudicied to think the environment is bad if there are any small government conservatives around.

Einstein's point: labeling something common sense does not make it true or logical.

You again prove my point. The Democrats have used their set of prejudices to not trust the president of our country on this issue.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

The sudden discovery by W that this nation is addicted to oil and his desire to show that he is doing something may have more to do with rhetoric for the approaching November elections than environmental problem solving.

However, regardless of whether one accepts the theory of global warming or not, there have long been steps that this administration - AND the others before it - could have taken using existing technologies that would bring about political and economic independence from oil producing nations while reducing the emissions that may be at the root of non-theoretical problems like air pollution, environmental degradation of land and water as well and the health problems they cause.

Applying engineering efficiencies in the design of our automobiles and transportation systems, electrical energy usage systems and electrical energy production systems would make a far greater difference in both reducing dependence on oil and improving the environment than all the methanol and so-called clean burning coal that we could ever produce.

While this approach is based on existing and usable science and technology, but it does takes national commitment. Up until now the leadership to bring this national action about has been lacking on the part of both major political parties.

Can you at least support the POTUS when he is right?

When he is right I will.

He ahs been in office for about 6 years. I am sure you'd agree he has made thousands and thousands of choices. Can you name 10 that you agree with? That should be less than .0001 of his choices so that should be easy.

I will review them this week his and get back to you.

Actually, I found that I could support about 30% of the 200+ executive orders that he has issued since taking office; others I had mixed opinions on; and about half, I strongly oppose.

Presidential proclamations - and presidents issue hundreds of them - are generally bland p.r. or political pronouncements on special occasions.

I supported some of his appointment including John Roberts, Colin Powell, Norm Mineta, and Paul O'Neill.

I supported his leadership against the Taliban in Afghanistan. Also, in the face of the national anger and fear in days following 911, I was proud of pronouncement against violence or civil rights violations directed at American Citizens of Arab descent or Muslim faith. Finally, his pragmatic approach on immigration reform and border control - while not perfect - is more realistic than much of what his critics (especially in his own party) have offered.

I will not get into every issue, but in general, my on this blog has been with willingness to sweep aside scientific evidence for political expediency: global warming, evolutionary theory, stem cell research funding being three of the most prominent areas.

Correction to my last paragraph above:

I will not get into every issue, but in general, my comments on this blog have to do with his willingness to sweep aside scientific evidence for political expediency: global warming, evolutionary theory, stem cell research funding being three of the most prominent areas.
