Camarillo for Simi Valley?

There are ten candidates for The Simi Valley School Board. Our schools must be vital parts of our community to be attracting this type of attention. I do not see myself as endorsing a candidate as much as helping voters choose from a wide pool. I don't know all the candidiates, their platforms, and their talents. I am looking forward to learning who will earn our votes as much as most readers do.
I will be posting information on all the candidates that send me information. If you have a favorite candidate, have them send something in so we know they are serious. If you discover a website, see the candidates' campaigning, or something else of interest, send it in.
I will also be making video's of candidates for a variety of offices. If you are interested, let me know. You can help by making video's ( if you have a digital camera it most likely has a film function), scheduling filming, or letting candidates know. My first city council candidate will be posted this week. I am also filming school board candidates in the coming weeks.
The first candidate to send me something about the school board is Tim Camarillo. Tim, thanks for finding new ways of interacting with voters. It is telling when candidates want to engage the community in a variety of formats they aren't trying to buy an election, but they want an informed electorate.

After you have read it leave comments for Tim to read and respond too.

Then if someone clicks on your name it will lead them to the article or website you want them to see.
It helps drive up traffic for their website. So, for example, if readers kept linking to jimdantona.com or foyforsupervisor.com it would elad one or the other higher in the listings if someone googled " candidate Ventura County Supervisor" or something.
Right now Peter Foy comes up first.
Google ranking could be important in a race with ten candidates.

Posted by: Why? at August 19, 2006 09:22 PMThank you again Brian for providing me a forum to discuss the upcoming School Board Race. I also feel in good company because you are a fellow and former AmeriCorps member too. I am in between being a young fellow and a long tooth which makes me in the company of both worlds, I will be 42 in September.
Thanks Again
Tim Camarillo

Are there any current school board members that you are most excitied about working with?
What has the school board done in the last few years that you have agreed with or disagreed with?
Posted by: Enter Clearly Fake Name Here at August 20, 2006 04:29 PMMr. Camarillo do you attend board meetings?

Posted by: ()()()()()() at August 22, 2006 07:08 PMOne of my goals in this campaign is to promote Preschool For All children. As a preschool teacher I have seen many families seek an Early Childhood Education for their children and the struggle to pay for it. As a Head Start teacher I have seen the disappointment of families who barely make money to live in this County and yet make to much to qualify for a quality Head Start Program. Some people may argue that we would drive private preschools out of business and yet we have private high schools and public schools that offer the best choices for families and their children. That is what I would like to offer Simi Valley families a Choice of quality public preschool for their children in the Simi Valley Unified School District. Here is the website for Preschool for all. http:/www.preschoolcalifornia.org/

Posted by: Tim Camarillo at August 23, 2006 09:31 AMAs a Former AmeriCorps Member I am interested in expanding Service Learning Opportunities in the Simi Valley Unified School District. Why have a Service Learning Program?
We can enhance student learning by joining theory with experience and thought with action. We can fill unmet needs in the community through direct service which is meaningful and necessary. We can enable students to help others, give of themselves, and enter into caring relationships with others. We can assist students to see the relevance of the academic subject to the real world. We enhance the self-esteem and self-confidence of your students.
We can develop an environment of collegial participation among students, faculty, and the community. We can give students the opportunity to do important and necessary work in Simi Valley.
We can increase pride and the civic and citizenship skills of students. We can expose students to societal inadequacies and injustices and empower students to remedy them. We can develop a richer context for student learning. We can better prepare students for their careers/continuing education. We can foster a re-affirmation of students' careers choices. We can give student greater responsibility for their learning. We can help students know how to get things done! We can impact local issues and local needs in Simi Valley.
Here is a website that has some information on Service Learning Opportunities for K-!2 students. http://www.servicelearning.org/k-12home/index.php
Posted by: Tim Camarillo at August 23, 2006 10:01 AMTim will you be at Donna Prenta's events this week? She said ALL school board candidates are welcome to come and listen to her speak and also meet local leaders.
Posted by: $^&` at August 23, 2006 11:10 AMYes I e-mailed Donna and she invited me to her events. I will try to make it to Thursday's event after my candidate interview with SEA/CSEA unions. I couldn't make it on Wednesday due to a prior commitment for an independent film I may be in.
Posted by: Tim Camarillo at August 23, 2006 02:07 PMCool! I am thinking of going and this means I can meet multiple candidates. I am hoping there are good snacks. I like snacks.
Posted by: Snowball in effect at August 23, 2006 09:29 PMSnowball,
I am certain there will be great snacks and beverages. Please come, donations are not required but are appreciated.
Your support is the most important thing to me and the opportunity to meet you in order to be a better representative for you.
There were five local candidates that did attend. I am happy to offer the opportunity to my supporters to have a chance to meet all of the candidates. The hosts are also grateful for the opportunity to meet potential school board members. All of my supporters are deeply committed to education and the community.
I realize how difficult and expensive it is to run for office and I admire anyone who runs, it shows commitment and sacrifice in order to serve. It is sad that money is sometimes the major factor in winning a campaign, there are many great candidates that do not run as a result.
Last night's event was awesome I am honored to have such wonderful supporters that wholeheartedly believe in me and want what is best for the community.
Call me 404-0914 and I will give you directions.
Thank you, Donna
Posted by: Donna Prenta at August 24, 2006 09:51 AMWhat candidates were at last night's party?

Posted by: Tim Camarillo at August 24, 2006 10:31 PMWhat does Camarillo think of higher teacher pay? If he likes it how will he pay for it.
Posted by: Western Union at August 26, 2006 09:59 AMHello Western Union I like your fast and speedy process. I think you should also include the Classified Employee's of the Simi Valley Unified School District in this question of higher pay. Yes I believe their should be a cost of living adjustment to compete with inflation. Why because we want to maintain a quality education for our students. We also want our Teachers and Classified Staff to be able to live in Simi Valley. Do you know how we will pay for it? Through my tax dollars and your tax dollars that we pay every year to the Federal and California State Government.
Well Western Union how much money do you think our hard working teachers and classified staff deserve to make? Don't you think our Teacher's and Classified Staff deserve the highest pay possible to be able to live in Simi Valley and enjoy the fruits of their labor. Western Union do you believe in outsourcing our most valued classified workers to save a buck or two? Would you outsource our school nurses? No because they are a needed to support the teaching of our students, they provide for the health care, feeding of our students and much needed administrative support. In general they are a team that is passionate about the work they do with our students. It is because they know they can make difference in every student's life.
Western Union you don't break up a team because it is good for business, and you don't have to deny higher pay to our dedicated Teachers and Classified Staff just to save a buck or too. Western Union the business of Education is not Business! The Business of Education is Teaching!
I think the average starting pay for a Teacher in The Simi Valley School District is about $35,000-38,000 a year. But don't quote me on that. I will try to find out and post it later and as you know with Experience and Education it will go up. As for Classified Staff it varies. You can research Classified Staff Salaries at http://www.simi.k12.ca.us/CLASS/05-06CSSJC.pdf
Thank you for your questions.
This question is for Check Cashing Services, who I saw post a comment on Thurlow Partridge's blogspace. Asking the question would a Union Endorsement be next! Check Cashing Services why do you dislike the Teacher and Classified Unions so much? Don't you know that these are your neighbors and that the Union Members are professionals in the field of Education.
Any School Board Candidate worth their salt would love an endorsement from the Union. It shows that you are commited to the Education of the students they serve. From what I have researched Republican Greg Stratton received an Endorsement and Campaign Money from the Teacher and Classified Unions. Did this make him a RINO-Republican In Name Only? No I think that he had something to offer to the students and families of the Simi Valley Unified School District and the Unions saw that.
FYI-For Your InformationCheck Cashing Services the Local School Unions are the Simi Educators Association representing the Teachers and the California School Employees Association representing the Classified Staff. They both provide a valuable service and are part of the Simi Valley Community.
Their websites are for Classified
http://www.csea.com/content/main/chapters/chapterdetails.asp section=mychapter&navid=9&chapterID=310
and for the Teachers it is http://www.simieducators.org/
I was thinking of Robert F. Kennedy after I left the Simi Valley School Board Interviews conducted by the Simi Educators Assocation and the California School Employees Association and these are two of my favorite quotations from him.
"It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope."
and the other is
"Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation."
I hope these quotes will provide inspiration for my campaign.
