Mark Van Dam Reloaded

( Editor's note: This is part 2 in a series with Moorpark City Council candidate Mark Van Dam. To view the earlier version, click here: If you have a candidate that would like video posted e-mail me.)

In this short clip Mark Van Dam discusses his views on The NorthPark Project.

Because the project is outside the Urban Growth Boundary of Moorpark an election was called on the development. The No side won in a landslide.

Feel free to leave questions for Mark Van Dam so he can answer them like he has done in the past.

Is Brian's writing accurate about the vote ( it was outside of the UGB?)?

What project past or upcoming are you against? I hope you are not one of those guys in favor of every project no matter what. There must be one you are against.

Dear #$#$, Thank you for commenting. Am I in favor of every project. Absolutely not! The expansion and enhancement of Moorpark should not be developer-dictated. Is it a good idea to cut lot sizes in order to add more homes? No. Development, both commercial and residential, should be well-planned and thought out, PRIOR to going to the voters. While Moorpark needs to be proactive with its future, it doesn't mean that we need to have every square foot of our hills and valleys built upon.

That was a pretty good dodge. I asked if there was a past or upcoming project. Is there a project with a name you didn't favor? Everyone is against vague bad ideas so I want concrete details.

What did you think of the extended timetable on repairing the biggest road in Moorpark over the last few years? Was it out of the cities control?

Dear #$#$,

I would be glad to be more specific to your question. North Park- No. There was far too much poor information being circulated for me to be comfortable to vote yes on that one. The projects off of Walnut Canyon being built by Toll Brothers, William Lyons, etc. concern me due to the increase of traffic on a small road that was not built to handle that amount of traffic. Add to it the increase of truck traffic, and it has become at times dangerous, such as 2 years ago when the cement truck overturned and spilled its load, causing Walnut Canyon School to be blocked from access. This issue also ties in to the redevelopment concerns many citizens have brought up. Thanks for your comments.

Dear Old 118,

Thank you for your comments. I agree that it took far too long to get that portion of roadway paved. This was not a city issue, but a State of California problem. Until we can complete a bypass road that diverts the trucks off of our main thoroughfare, we will continue to have a battle with L.A. Avenue and the trucks. The county and state have not been very helpful, and I know that our current council has done quite a bit to get some remedies, but we need to look at alternatives since our past efforts have not gone very far. I believe that we need to join other small, local cities and band together to hire a lobbyist (or firm) to promote our needs in Sacramento. We should also look into earmarking some of the new sales tax revenues to complete the bypass road. It is difficult to swallow the fact that our city has been built around 2 state highways (118 and 23), but that does not mnean we should give up. We just need to work that much harder and be that much more creative. Thank you for your comments on this blog.

Do you ever lower sales tax receipts by shopping in Simi Valley?

Posted by: ^....^ at September 15, 2006 11:09 PM

Dear ^....^,

Have I ever lowered sales tax receipts by shopping in Simi Valley? Yes. While Moorpark has increased the opportunity to shop in our city, we do not have every available retail business necessary to meet our needs. A nice bookstore, a Trader Joes, Costco, and other retail businesses would be very convienant to have here, but we do not. A bookstore and Trader Joes would be fabulous, a Costco would be a bit much for our small town. We have an office supply store, a pet store, and much more slated to be open very soon in the Village at Moorpark, and I am excited about being able to spend more of my family's money in town, benefiting local business and our city. Thank you for commenting.
