I saw an ad in today's Star that Calvary Chapel of Thousand Oaks was sponsering a debate for school board candidates from Thousand Oaks and surronding areas including Simi Valley.
I didn't save the paper, but if anyone has details can you post them?
If you are a candidate and would like to attend I suggest you contact the church.
The church is not endorsing candidates but are looking for answers from a Conservative Christian point of view.
Maybe a local Church can host a forum that Peter Foy would know is a fair event so he has a chance to debate Jim Dantona on the issues.

You are wrong about this, Calvary Chapel is secretly endorsing school board candidates. Jason from the Church there is sending around an e mail saying "Our candidates are posed to take over local school boards and impose our Christian Coalition agenda".
Oh please........you don't think for one minute that Mr. Foy's handlers are going to let him open his mouth in public do you?
I heard Foy try and speak and the guy cannot even put two words together, that is why his handlers won't let him debate!
The Phony Farmer Foy is not stupid. He knows to do as he is told by his handlers and not speak. If elected, his national agenda will come out though. Difference between The Phony Farmer and Abramoff are education, cranial capacity and objective. The Farmer falls far short in the first two; in the last, Abramoff wanted money while the Farmer is on a biblical mission. Nevertheless, both share similar ambition.
If you have a copy of this e-mail please post it.
David Kuo said it best but I'll need to paraphrase:
"Faith is an end unto itself. When Faith becomes a tool to be used, there is something terribly wrong."
Hey GS great paraphrase. Hey Brian I received a letter from the Calvary Chapel on Saturday. Here is what is said.
October 20, 2006
Tim Camarillo
You are cordially invited to address our congregation and the community on October 29th, 2006 at the 11;15 A.M. service. All local school board candidates have been invited to speak on areas of concern expressed by members of our congregation.
Each candidate will have five minutes to address these interests. Please be advised that the press will be notified of all candidates who RSVP.
We look forward to having you join us on Sunday the 29th at 11:15 A.M. and thank you for your earliest reply.
Sincerely,
Rob McCoy
Senior Pastor
Enc: Areas of Concern
AREAS OF CONCERN
Members of our congregation have expressed interest in candidate positions on the following issues:
*Parental notifcation of controversial textbook changes and materials that could be offensive to a family's personal moral/religious beliefs.
* Abstinence education and parental consent before students are instructed on issues relating to human sexuality, including discussions on alternative lifestyles.
*Stressing basic academic skills (reading, writing, arithmetic) over more socially oriented curriculum (situational ethics, self esteem, alternative lifestyles).
*A moment of silence for voluntary prayer in the schools.
*Teaching alternatives to evolution theory including intelligent design.

I hope this will be helpful to all your readers. It didn't sound like it was a debate when I read it.
Sincerely,
Tim Camarillo
Are you going Tim? Do you think they have a partisan one sided agenda?
It seems they don't care to unite us but instead they seek to divide us.
Brian--
Well written analysis of the sign ordinance. I think it's interesting that the blog is beginning to shed light on so many limitations that impede a healthy political process.
1. A county campaign finance system that requires a fake voluntary campaign expenditure limit combined with contributuion limits lower than someone running for school board basically to ensure incumbents remain in power and any successful challenger would have to be a self-financed millionaire.
2. A sign ordinance that significantly curtails public speech and name recognition in the public square hindering local races and the name recognition of challengers.
3. The IRS actively investigating and bringing audits to bear on churches who may actually have something to say about the government and campaigns as it reconciles itself with the church's faith in public affairs.
For a free country, we sure have a lot of rules that limit free expression.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or the press; or the right of the people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances"
Where can I read about Foy's extreme fundementalism?? I see it come up a lot
in these chat rooms? Where does Foy say
he wants us to be run by OLD TESTAMENT laws?
Also does anyone know Jims religious background?
Is he a church member?
Hi Question for Tim Camarillo. No I am not going to that event. I consider myself a spiritual person but I do not want to force my beliefs on others or others to force their beliefs on me. Wars have been fought and are currently being fought over religious beliefs, take the Taliban for instance. What can I say "We live in a fearful world and their seems to be a lot of control issues involved here.
I am curious to see who is going and if all Simi School Board Candidates were invited. Also the fact it takes place in Thousand Oaks makes me wonder why you would invite Simi School Board Candidates to a Thousand Oaks event?
I just received a message over the telephone that if I was unable to attend, I could send my answers by e-mail and it would be relayed to the congregation. Anyway I will let you know If I decide to send an E-mail or not. I will post my decision on this matter later today either after the PTA/PTSA School Board Candidate Forum or tomorrow morning.
Thank you,
Tim Camarillo
Jim Dantona and his family are Catholic. I believe he attended a Catholic High School in the other valley.
Tim, Your's is the most courageous post I've seen on this blog. You have my respect and admiration.
Tim:
I saw some of the debate tonight and while I disagree with you on getting rid of NCLB, I would say it is important to go and face those who disagree with you or tell them from your perspective why they are wrong.
Thanks GS. Hey Scott, thank you for your advice, I will sleep on it tonight. It's been a very long day and I want a fresh perspective in the morning.
Sincerely,
Tim Camarillo
Speaking of debates...Dean Kunicki refused to appear at the County School Board debate scheduled for this evening, by the League of Women Voters. Even so, I'll bet his opponent, Donna Prenta, will be there, at the Sinaloa Middle School parking lot (Royal between Sinaloa & First) at 6PM to apologize for him and chat with voters. Anyone who wants to show support for Donna should drive by and honk. I'll be stopping by to thank her for running a great campaign and for being the best candidate for County School Board.
Poor Dean. He could be great for the community, but always steps on his foot. To not debate is not his style. He has been spending too much time with the Phony Farmer.
If Dean doesn't debate he will lose. He is already behind because he sided with Strickland against Simi Valley.
I wonder if Dean Kunicki will be there?
Tim, The Taliban remark is from left field. Would you care to expound upon that? Or is it duck and cover time?
With all due respect John. I said what I meant. I did not go to that event becuase I felt that Calvary Church had a one sided agenda. I am not sure if it was partisan but it sure felt like it. It was a historic event being that It was the first time that a candidate forum was hosted by the evangelical church, which uses scriptural teachings related to abortion, same-sex marriage and influence of faith on government.
Two years ago, Pastor McCoy led a series of sermons talking about politics and authority driven by morality that were directed at the Republicans' 2004 national convention and their presidential nominee.
Here are the questions again that were sent to the candidates.
*Parental notifcation of controversial textbook changes and materials that could be offensive to a family's personal moral/religious beliefs.
What is controversial about the book? What is offensive? Whose family's personal moral/religious beliefs are we talking about My beliefs or yours?
* Abstinence education and parental consent before students are instructed on issues relating to human sexuality, including discussions on alternative lifestyles.
I believe parental consent is involved in these matters. What are we really talking about a Human Sexuality class or a health education that talks about birth control?
*Stressing basic academic skills (reading, writing, arithmetic) over more socially oriented curriculum (situational ethics, self esteem, alternative lifestyles).
The schools are stressing basic academic skills they are part of standardized testing. Situational ethics are we talking about abortion, something that goes back to health education.
*A moment of silence for voluntary prayer in the schools.
I believe there are religious clubs on campuses and if this so prayers are already being said during lunch or after school. So why is this an issue of forcing it into classrooms?
*Teaching alternatives to evolution theory including intelligent design.
No we only teach science and the scientific method. Intelligent design is not a theory but a belief no hard science to back it up.
These are loaded question that say either you are for us or against us. Nothing unifying here, only division. When I read these questions it appears to me to be about control issues. There appears to me a great fear of alternative lifestyles and nontraditional families and I believe we should support all families no matter who they are. Where is the acceptance and tolerance of others that are not like you, whether it be gender, race or religion.
Now let's look at the forum out of the 25 candidates invited to speak, eight came and one e-mailed her comments. Why is that? Are they all cowards as one woman pointed out in the comments section of this article. I don't think so. Now here are the people who spoke Conejo Valley Unified School District candidates John Anderson, Mike Dunn, Greg Lennox and Tim Penix; Simi Valley Unified School District candidate Raymond Cruz; Dean Kunicki, Ventura County Board of Education, Area Four, candidate; and Pleasant Valley School District candidates Jennifer Miller and Kim Marra Stephenson.
And this is what they said, most of the candidates expressed their own religious background and thanked the church for the opportunity to speak. Many of them echoed the Christian values of their audience. Yes to voluntary prayer in schools. Yes to teaching alternatives to evolution. Yes to engaging parents more in what their children are reading. Yes on abstinence education. It seems to me there were a lot of yes's at this forum.
Again I consider myself a spiritual person but I do not want to force my beliefs on others or others to force their beliefs on me. Wars have been fought and are currently being fought over religious beliefs, take the Taliban for instance. What can I say "We live in a fearful world and their seems to be a lot of control issues involved here.
As for the Taliban remark being from left, I think it could also come from the right field myself. The Taliban scare me more than Christian Fundamentalist. The Taliban are the extremist of extremist. They took the basics of a religion and extorted it to fit their own political agenda. Let's talk about total control once in power, the Taliban instituted a form of Shari'ah Islamic law which closely followed the traditionalist Deobandi school of Islam. Among the laws applied were Islamic punishments, administered by a religious police force, including amputation of one or both hands for theft and stoning for adultery.
The Taliban banned all forms of television, imagery, music and sports. In response to this ban, the International Olympic Committee suspended Afghanistan from participation in the 2000 Summer Olympics. Men were required to keep their beards at a specified length: women were obliged to wear the burqa (a long cloak-like piece of clothing) when appearing in public, and failure to do so could attract a public beating.
Talk about religious tolerance In March 2001, the Taliban ordered the demolition of two statues of Buddha carved into cliffsides at Bamiyan, one 38 metres tall and about 1800 years old, the other 53 metres tall and about 1500 years old. The act was condemned by UNESCO and many countries around the world.
Today we are fighting in a war against Islamic Fundamentalism. We were attacked because our basic beliefs do not match theirs. A war that has deep roots in religion that goes back to the Crusades like other wars that were fought in the name of god.
Is Creationism and Religion going to keep us off the real issues of the school board campaign. Can we talk about more important things like the C4 Bond Measue, possible future bond meausres, how will maintain these measures, Early Childhood Education, Vocational programs and technology upgrades. Or are we going to get stuck in this creationism and religious muck.
Thank God I can expound on the Taliban and express my feelings on this subject without ducking and covering.
Thank you John G Connole for your question.
Tim Camarillo
Anyone here attend the Calvary Chapel forum? Though Donna Prenta never received the questions she did take the time to write to the pastor. Apparently he read the letter out loud to the audience and the audience felt it reflected very well on Donna and her commitment to our children. I wasn't at the forum but would like to get someone's first hand take on the reaction to the letter.
Yes,
I did send an e-mail even though I never received the questions. I was invited to attend two days before the event and unable to go.
I am not uncomfortable with answering questions from any person or body of people who I will represent once I am elected. Which is everyone regardless of religion or party affiliation.
Since my opponent has refused to attend a Candidate's forum in his own district I felt it was important to take advantage of every public opportunity that was available to reach out to consituents.
Pastor Rob told me that there are members of the Church from Simi Valley and Moorpark that attend.
County Board of Education will cover the entire County so I felt it was relevant to answer their questions and to let them know how they can contact me directly.
I want to always be accessible to everyone.
The Church only allowed a five minute statement from candidates.
I explained my motivation for wanting to serve the children/constituents which has been consistent with everyone I have spoken with throughout my campaign.
I explained what my goals are as your representative and my experience and successes.
The e-mail I sent was nothing new to this blog that I have already shared, including my faith in God.
I went to speak before the Ventura County Republican Central Committee as well even though they had already recommended endorsing my opponent. I thought it was important to introduce myself regardless of their support so they would know me better when I was elected and to also show that I had no hard feelings.
I also visited the Ventura County Democratic Club in Simi Valley to introduce myself and let members know how to contact me. I believed since it was a non-partisan position it was important to introduce myself.
