Glen Becerra for State Senate?

| | Comments (30)

Glen_Becerra[2].jpg
( The above picture was created for me by Brian H. Mack. It is Glen Becerra, Simi Valley council member as Maj Alan "Dutch" Schaeffer from Arnold's movie the Predator. It all started when I saw a press release ( i En Espanol!, but since removed ) and story that Glen Becerra is helping Arnold team up to appeal to Hispanic voters.

Rumor has it that Glen Becerra was being promoted at the Republican Party State Convention last weekend as a candidate to replace Tom McClintock for CA Senate Seat 19. Someone posted here on my blog that a flyer was being passed around.

I was not at the convention. I don't have a copy of the flyer. And I don't have any second source to the rumor.

Can anyone bat down or confirm this rumor? I am sure one of my readers could just ask Glen Becerra and post the response.

I would e-mail him but I know he is busy getting ready to outlaw the menace of hot dog stands, pet goats, affordable self storage centers, and whatever else the city has been up to.

Maybe I am teasing the city council. Or maybe I am teasing Glen Becerra's opponents who won't have a long voting record of tough votes like state budgets, illegal immigration, and workers' compensation reform.

If you want to e-mail him yourself here is the address: glen@glenbecerra.org

Here was the original post word for word:

Hey,
I just got back from the Republican State Convention and guess what the news on the floor was? Glen "I've done absolutely nothing" Baccera is thinking of running against Tony "Slide the $$ in the back pocket" Strickland in the Republican primary for state senate. It appears republican leadership is quite unhappy with Tony and Audra. In a leadership meeting held during the convention the word was the 19th Senate District is not a safe republican seat anylonger and they fear Tony, Audra or Glen would be weak candidates. Meanwhile flyers were being handed out on the floor and at the hotel promoting Glen for the seat. We need to do better than them. I think most republican observers believe it isn't safe republican anymore. Dantona's name was brought up as someone who could (with leadership help) beat any one of those three. After meeting with leadership I agree SD 19 is not a safe republican seat. We can't afford Tony, Audra or Glen.

Vote Glen for State Senate? hooray?

Well Glen's record would be tough to argue with. Let's see, he approves massive developments (Big Sky) in the hills of Simi. He then promotes and approves condos on the gateway to Simi. He has a very important job at Southern California Edison doing, uh, uh, something. He works on a budget for a City flush with money, because they can't find a development they don't like. How can you argue with that? Seems like a great candidate.

The only chance Glen has is if he is running 1-on-1 against Peter Foy and even then Glen's past will haunt him.

Why is it that Tony always talks up the moderates but when he gets the chance to back up a moderate Republican in a field of conservatives he has nothing nice to say?

Tony Strickland is already planning on running. I guess this kills the story, no?

Glen Becerra and Tony Strickland will work something out to avoid an expensive campaign.

You are somehow suggesting Glen Becerra is a moderate? You must be kidding. Hopefully you are not pointing to his support of Donna Prenta as an example, like others have. The biggest reason for that support is his absolute disdain for Dean Kunicki. Glen would have endorsed Howard Dean over Dean Kunicki. No offense Donna I voted for you and you were the better candidate, but Glen's hatred for Dean was the #1 reason to endorse.

What else are you pointing to for his moderate view? Is he pro-choice? He's supportive of gay rights? He's socially liberal? Or is he a fiscal liberal? He believes in more welfare? Please clue me in, because the Glen Becerra I know is a conservative to very-conservative Republican. Is he moving to the middle knowing he can't out-conservative Strickland?

Glen will not run for state senate. That battle will not be until 2012 because term limits will be extended most likely and McClintock knows that is the only position he can be elected for, as statewide, he has now lost four times. On the republican side that battle will be between Strickland, Gorell or Richman. On the dem side it is an open question, but, we may also have re-districting that would even the registration numbers and actually make it a competitive race and would help get the strangle hold the VCRCC has on the populace of VC and end their reign of extremism. Glen Becerra will run for Gallegly's seat and will most likely be supported by Gallegly. If you remember Elton called Glen the night before he announced he would not be running to give Glen the chance to file, he did NOT call Tony Strickland. The next day when it came out, Audra Strickland then ran into the elections division foaming at the mouth and wanting to pull papers for Tony, when they said no, she tried to pull them for herself and was again told no, because both had pulled papers for other offices. Becerra though made the right call by not filing because it would have looked like a back room deal. Of course Elton had screwed up and could not pull out of the race. The Strickland's were left with big piles of egg on their faces.

I was at the Republican convention as a delegate. I saw the flyer which was simply a inexpensive flyer being handed out on the floor and one was slid under my door at my hotel.
I spoke to a couple of people who were quite happy there was an alternative to Tony Strickland.
I also tryed to call Glen to verify it, but as usual no return call. What I was able to find out from Elton's people was that Glen wanted this to be below the radar as not to give notice to Stickland. Well the cats out of the bag and no matter what Glen may now try to say he is really trying to bump Strickland. For those of you who don't know, Elton hates both Stricklands and now knows if he were to pull from congress Tony would run for his seat and trounce Glen. So republican insiders who also don't like Stickland are trying to make sure Tony Strickland is defeated again. As a Republican I don't like Tony Stickland at all, but Glen is a real light weight. Neither has done anything for good republicans. Tony is right about Glen's history. Before the ink was dry on the flyer Stickland's team was spreading rumors all over the convention floor about Glen's past.
The fact is neither have a very good past or record of accomplishments. Bad choice for good Republicans.

Glen Becerra for State Senate, what a joke Glen can't even handle being a city council member.

CAPC (California Association of Political Centrists) will have a ranking system in place in time for these races, as part of our voter education program. A candidate will have to do more than just "announce" they are a centrist to receive a positive ranking.

I agree that shadowy "skeletons in the closet" comments are low ball politics. Please ignore them.

24 hours and no flyer. Sounds like a ruse to me.

In regards to the anonymous email you received. I was at the convention as well. If leadership is against the Stricklands then why did the Senate leader, Dick Ackerman say on the convention floor that "we need to rally behind Tony Strickland"?

Probably because Ackerman loves backroom deals, pilfering the public trust and handing the football off to a relative or spouse, like the one he wants us to support. Why get new blood when you can recycle used up candidates that nobody trusts? No wonder why the California Republican party is ignored by the feds.

I was responding to the part in the email that states, " It appears republican leadership is quite unhappy with Tony and Audra." This seems to contradict what I was hearing from republican leadership at the convention.

Derek- Whom do you suggest we support? Who should run?

I understand what you were responding to and my comments are not directed at you, but at the frustration of the lack of solid candidates in the party.

Interesting question as to who should run. I am looking for some new blood, some fresh ideas. We need a leader in this state (and this country). Maybe the person who should run isn't known yet. I look through those that are elected and have run in the past. I'm not impressed at all.

Keith Richman - blah, Pat Hunter - no, Glen Becerra - no thanks, Stricklands - forget it, Mike Morgan - ??, Peter Foy - might as well elect a baboon to push the buttons, Bob Larkin - makes Foy look like a genius. Maybe somebody out there we haven't seen yet. Can that person put a team together to compete with the favored sons? Probably not.

HEY BRIAN H> MACK,

can you make a picture of me like that if i send you a head shot. That is awsome

The website linked shows a run-off on June 3, 2008 between Hannah-Beth Jackson-D and Tony Strickland-R. Someone else is making predictions as well.

Hannah-Beth Jackson could be a serious contender.

Tony striking a pose.

Hannah striking a pose.

Brian,
You should do a blog on how the Simi Valley City Council is trying to inject big government into every aspect of our lives. They say where to park your RV, say no one can sell from a cart, say no signs, etc, etc. Simi is becoming a dictatorship of the Council. I thought republicans were for small government? That's a joke in Simi!

No denial thus far about Glen Becerra running for state senate?

"New Ideas Come With New Blood...I want to get the career politicians out of Washington and make them go home and live under the laws they've passed."
-- Congressional Candidate Elton Gallegly (1986)

Becerra always gets his name in the paper hoping to raise the ID but does he have the fire in the intestines to fight a Strickland? I bet he works a deal.

Tony Strickland should remember when Becerra calls who has the upper hand.

I WONDER IF THE MASHBURN DEAL WILL COME UP IF HE RUNS. WHY DOES GLEN BECERRA WANT TO RUN IN AN ELECTION WHEN HE DOESN'T REALLY LIKE THEM?

Someone should be balmed for the rising crime in the city. But who?

The criminals.

If I had to choose between Strickland and Becerra I would go with Glen. Strickland needs to get a real job and stop living off my tax dollars, same for his wife!

You think you hate Tony now, but wait until you get to know Glen Becerra.

REAL SIMPLE-BOTH TONY STICKLAND AND GLEN BACERRA ARE BOTH LOSERS AND BAD CHOICES.

Hey NO CHOICE. Who do you think would win in a real fistfight, Glen or Tony or Michelle Foster?

I would bet on Michelle Foster.

I would bet on Michelle FOster also.
