Peter Foy and SSFL
( one of the most watched videos on youtube tagged Simi Valley)
All the cool kids call it the SSFL instead of Rocketdyne I guess. I am trying to get the toxic stew from the place to be called Boeing Juice. If you will help out with that nomenclature I'd appreciate it. Whatever blogger came up with that one, thank you.
Anyways, Peter Foy has a press release about his efforts to nudge Boeing into cleaning up the facility and then making it into a park. Who else deserves credit for making this happen?
My vote is for State Senator Sheila Kuehl who has been very outspoken on behalf of local citizens even when Tom McClintock seems to not be very interested in the issue.

SANTA SUSANA FIELD LABORATORY SITE TO BE USED FOR OPEN SPACE, PARKS AND RECREATION
SIMI VALLEY, Calif.— On October 12, 2007 Governor Schwarzenegger announced he intends to sign a measure (SB990 proposed by Senator Sheila Kuehl) to accelerate cleanup at the old Rocketdyne Santa Susana Field Laboratory located at the east end of Ventura County’s District 4. Additionally, the Boeing Company, who currently owns most of the site, has signed a Letter of Intent to transfer the property to the state after extensive cleanup has been done at no cost to the taxpayers.
The former rocket engine test and nuclear research site has long been of concern to the county’s residents living in close proximity to the facility. These residents have been greatly distressed that the property might be used for residential or agricultural purposes without the benefit of proper cleanup.
“It became quite evident during my campaign last year that this was a very important issue to Simi Valley residents,” said Ventura County District 4 Supervisor Peter Foy. “Shortly after my installation as Supervisor, I joined the effort and began working closely with Boeing officials to help aid in achieving a sensible solution that would the most beneficial to all concerned.”
While the wheels of resolution are in motion, Boeing estimates it will take about 10 years to clean up the Santa Susana field lab.

I don't like Foy, he seems like a real phony!
Posted by: Franklin at October 16, 2007 09:55 AMWhatever he seems like, as long as he places the well-being of the families of our community above all else, for whatever reason, he's got my support. There're still plenty of big issues to prove his mettle like smart development vs overdevelopment, county health services, the landfill, the 118 corridor and others. Let's wait and see.
Posted by: gs at October 16, 2007 10:15 AMThe only reason we have not seen the real Peter Foy is because he is a minority on the board of sups. If there were two more Foy's on that board you would get to see the real Foy and his extremist agenda, hopefull we will never find out if I am right.
Posted by: Franklin at October 16, 2007 10:51 AMI'm not too concerned about an elected leader's political views IF his/her actions promote the well-being of the community. The time to take exception is IF those views conflict with the better interests of the community.
Us Knollies will know soon enough where the Supervisor's fits in.
Posted by: gs at October 16, 2007 12:13 PMWhat is it that they say about victory having a thousand fathers and defeat being an orphan?
Seems to me the real heroes here are the ordinary citizens of Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, Chatsworth, Westlake Village and the adjacent canyon areas who have fought for decades to get this thing cleaned up. It was their focused determination that finally has lead to action.
The political chemistry was finally right in the state for the state legislature and the governor to pay attention to the people and get something done right for a change.

Posted by: gs at October 16, 2007 03:58 PMThis only happened because Democrats control the state legislature and a Democrat wrote the bill. Strickland and McClintock were AWOL on this issue, but that isn't too surprising. Especially not from tom being that he doesn't live here anymore and likely never will.
Maybe if it was something happening in Sacramento it would be different.

Great story!.......I'm only about 75 miles maybe alittle further from Harrisburg where Three Mile Island was located. It makes you think alittle more about what really is going on at these sites.

Our thanks to the Senator, the Supervisor and all the other elected officials that spoke up in support of the grass roots movement to tackle the SSFL mess. Let's hope to see more such support for the people of our wonderful community, here in the east county.
