Simi bills a church

The City of Simi Valley and its mayor decide to send a bill for $40,000 of police time to the United Church of Christ over a protest by outsiders in front of the church over its giving refuge to a Mexican woman seeking legal residence status to stay with her American husband and children.

Big employers and the VC housing market

Between the sinking real estate market and the explosion of foreclosures, the last thing the region needs is big job cuts from its top two employers; Amgen just announced 1,600 possible layoffs, most affecting the Thousand Oaks area, while Calabasas-based Countrywide may lay off far more.

The Petraeus report

The long-awaited report by the top U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus, was largely a stay-the-course, things-could-be-worse report, with no real call for any troop withdrawals before summer 2008, and those mostly limited to the ones added by the "surge" from earlier this year.

This cartoon actually embodies a number of news stories, including a drought (especially in So Cal) that may be heading for a record, the limited or even reduced supply of new water (such as with some of the Colorado River water being allocated to Arizona and Nevada) even as California's population grows, and the potentially huge impact from global warming, causing the vital Sierra Nevada snowpacks to shrink.

Health insurance for poor kids

To the consternation of many in his own party, President Bush is strongly threatening to veto an increase by Congress in funding healthcare insurance for poor children via the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). Governor Schwarzenegger is among those upset, and is promising to come up with a solution on the state level to provide universal coverage for kids.
