Obama and Wright

qqxsgObamaPieces.jpg

Barack Obama's former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, probably negatively impacted Obama's campaign more than anything other than the issue of experience. Not content to leave things alone, Wright went before the Press Club in Washington, made statements about "not being controversial" and kept calling Obama "Barack HUSSEIN Obama" (using his real, Islamic-based middle name)... every time Wright opens his mouth, he probably costs his dear friend 10,000 votes.

Preying on teachers

TeacherVultures427.jpg

With the uncertainty over budget cuts to deal with California's multi-billion-dollar deficit, hundreds of thousands of teachers have been given advance layoff notices (the state is required to give such notices to anyone even potentially getting laid off). A news story in the Star reports that other states are using this situation as an opportunity to cherry-pick away nervous teachers for their own school districts.

A small (very small) step on global warming

qqxsgBushStep.jpg

Ahead of Earth Day, President Bush called for a halt in the growth of greenhouse emissions by 2025, while rejecting any mandatory limits. That's a pretty laid-back approach for the planet's most serious environmental crisis ever, with 17 years before a halt in the increase, with no mandatory restrictions, posing potentially catastrophic consequences... but at least he has acknowledged that global warming IS a problem, which for him is a big step.

Do-it Center vs. Home Depot

HomeDepot413.jpg

The Do-it Center store in Thousand Oaks is the primary mover in a ballot measure intended to restrict a new Home Depot store from setting up shop on Hampshire Road on the site of a former Kmart. There are good reasons to be concerned about the impact of a new Home Depot, but the Do-it Center has a pretty obvious self-interest in this matter.

IED's

qqxsgIED.jpg

Even when soldiers make it back from Iraq, they don't necessarily make it back all the way: various mental health issues, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, breakups of marriages and even suicides have increased with the returning veterans.
