3 o'clock update

Here's a look at what's planned for Page One of tomorrow's Ventura County Star:

A report on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's visit to Washington D.C., where he got California Republicans and Democrats in Congress to agree to work together to try to bring more federal dollars to the state.

The announcement out of Sacramento that two members of the state Assembly will introduce a version of Oregon's controversial Death with Dignity bill.

The story from Simi Valley on how police property room employee Lori Tate solved the mystery of the man's ashes, found in an abandoned Simi storage facility and brought to the police department.

President Bush's appointment of John Negroponte to become the nation's first national intelligence director.

A story by The Associated Press that an Iraqi being interrogated by the CIA at Abu Ghraib priosn died after being subjected to a technique widely described as a form of torture.

The story of the debate this morning at the Ventura County Economic Forum regarding proposed LNG facilities off the Oxnard coastline will be run on the Local news pages, and the rest of the coverage of the forum will be on the Business pages.

Added extras on the Star website tomorrow will include the daily podcast by Bruce McLean, a video of the tour of the Reagan library Air Force One exhibit and a gardening video that accompanies tomorrow's Home and Garden section.

Having lived in Newbury Park for 44 years, I have subscribed to the "Star" the whole time. I certainly miss the local news. Your newspaper does not address current newsworthy local stories of human interest(i.e. Page B1 of 2-18-05 Conejo Valley Days badge design, etc) What happened to a picture of the badge, designer, etc. Was there a contest for the theme? We made headline news about the murder on Wendy Drive and now it's a small paragraph on the same page. I read the Acorn news for local info. Is that your idea of local coverage?

Thanks for your comment.

One of the most difficult things we do each day at the Star is to decide what stories to write, what photos to take and what we put in the newspaper. We have limited resources (people and space) and thus try to make decisions that we believe best covers what we think is the news in our communities.

We devote a good deal of space to community news each day (like the feature on the kids in the jazz band at a T.O. middle school in yesterday's paper). And we also produce a separate weekly publication, Conejo Valley Life, to expand on coverage in your area.

As to the decisions yesterday, we know that we will continue our advance coverage of Conejo Valley days up to (and through) the event in April. So yesterday we sent our photographer to the unique event at California Lutheran University where the four past and present CLU presidents were together.
As to the murder story, we ran a Page One story on the case last week with an interview with the suspect's mom and yesterday thought that his plea of not guilty was a small step in the ongoing process of the case. Obviously we'll continue to be covering it.

One of the purposes of this blog is to let you know what we think is the news of the day, and why. And to hear from you about what you think is the news of the day.

So, thank you very much for letting us know. I passed along the comments to our editors.
