The Postal Service is pushing harder to end regular Saturday mail delivery as a way to save money. There is another announcement today about it from the Postmaster General.
What would it mean to you if we lost Saturday mail delivery? Does it matter? How would it impact you? Let us know what you think about this idea -- send me an email at jmoore@vcstar.com.

I think it's a great idea. Let the Government save money, so postage doesn't go up. Also Mail carriers deserve that day of to have a 2 day weekend. Besides that there's not much mail delivery on Saturday.
Is the cost of postage seriously an issue?? I mean really! I hear this complaint all the time from people who don't want mail a thank you note because "postage has gone up so much..." but really is it too much to pay even $1.00 to take your letter from say California to New York?? I don't think so...postage is cheap for the service provided. With that being said, if it saves the USPS money to cut back a day then by all means cut Saturday. Most businesses that would really need delivery are either closed on Saturdays or could use an alternate form of delivery so it really is not a critical day.
I wouldn't mind if Saturday delivery was discontinued as I only check for mail a few days a week.
What I find disappointing is when the USPS cut Saturday hours at the smaller satellite Post offices.
Stopping Saturday mail delivery is a great idea. There is absolutely no reason a person can not go 2 days with mail. The post office can save significant money by doing this and it needs to be done ASAP. And I agree postage could be higher and it would still be a good deal. They should really raise the cost to mail "junk mail", it does nothing but fill up my trash can.
Great Idea. Reduce delivery hours by 17 percent. Now reduce the lazy unionized workforce by 17 percent.
Actually I don't see this problem getting any better in the future and this is why.
1) People are using the text feature on their cell phone for instant communications with friends.
2) The massive increase in email use on the internet which grows larger every day.
3) The ability to pay your bills online via your banking institution.
4) The ability to purchase and pay for items on the internet.
All I seem to get via the mail is junk and advertising and we all know they get a large discount. As more and more people use the internet this problem will continue to grow, maybe the Post Office as we know it is a relic of the past.
Only having mail delivery 5 days a week isn't the end of the world - apart from bills, I generally only get junk mail filling up my mailbox. I - and along with a million others - are part of a problem for the traditional postal service. In these days of email and almost instant messaging, apart from birthday and Christmas cards
In response to CargoMan - not sure as to the union-bashing comment. It does seem that certain posters here are really keen on hammering normal hard-working folks, possibly due to that old green-eyed monster...
I think this is a great idea. Do you really get mail on Saturday that cannot wait until Monday? With all the payroll, SS, Pension Checks that are direct depoist in the bank, I see no reason why we are spending money on Saturday Delivery. Unless it is for Medical or Life Issues.
Let us stop all the mail on Saturday, its mostly junk anyway.
Can wait until Monday.
Do it do it do it! Who cares about Sat delivery?
Great idea do it
Go ahead and do it. Just still maintain Saturday delivery when either the Friday before or the Monday after is a holiday with no mail delivery. By the way there is one city in the United States that does not have Saturday mail delivery. It is Loma Linda, CA. They have Sunday instead of Saturday delivery due to a large population of Sabbatarians.
"Neither rain, nor sleet, nor gloom of night will keep me from
my appointed rounds." Well! except Saturdays...
Eliminating Saturday delivery is a good idea.
What's the percentage of USPS mail that is represented by direct mail and advertising? It seems that raising fees on this type of mail is a GREAT idea!
That's not the best idea since most of us on unemployment still use the mail system and can only send claims on specific dates. They don't allow you to use the automated service on an every claim basis. Those of you who say to do it are selfishly thinking only of yourselves.
Good defense and horrible offense eh? Possibly he should coach in the SEC.
This design is incredible! You most certainly know how to keep a reader amused. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost...HaHa!) Wonderful job. I really loved what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
