What we're working on today (Tuesday, March 30)

Here are some of the stories we're working on today...

We're checking to see if there's anything more to the story of the armed robbery at the cell phone store in Camarillo last night where masked men robbed the place and tied up two workers.

We are putting together information to advance this Friday's Metrolink board meeting where the board will discuss pulling the plug on all Metrolink routes to the West County and reduce the number to Moorpark and Simi Valley. That story probably won't be finished until tomorrow.

We'll have an interesting story today taking a look at the Cesar Chavez holiday -- which is tomorrow -- and what changes have evolved in the lives of farm workers since Chavez began mounting his campaigns in Oxnard and throughout California 50 years ago.

What we are working on today (Monday, March 29)

Here are some of the stories we are working on today ...

We will be attending the press conference this afternoon at Ventura County jail regarding the arrest warrant for Jose Antonio Medina, the so-called "king of heroin" in Mexico who was arrested there on a warrant from Ventura County. We broke the story last Friday. We hope to stream today's press conference live online if allowed.

We are following all the unrelated tragic accidents over the weekend, including the two traffic fatalities, the drowning and the death in the house fire. As we develop anything new on any of the stories, we'll post them on the site.

And we continue to look for folks who might have questions on how the new healthcare reform law might affect them. If you have a question, we'll get an answer. Send it to Marty Bonvechio at mbonvechio@vcstar.com.

Here are some of the stories we're working on today:

We'll take a look at how governments are using social media like Facebook and Twitter to communicate with their residents and get their message directly to folks.

We have a report that Steven Honma may make his first court appearance today on charges that he shot and killed Norman Schureman at a Westlake Village neighborhood party Saturday night. That's still tentative although Honma has been released from the hospital and booked in LA County jail.

And we are still interested in hearing your questions related to healthcare reform. If you have a question about how it affects you, send it along to Marty Bonvechio at mbonvechio@vcstar.com. We've found an independent expert who is going to help us get the answers for you.

Here are some of the stories we are working on today ...

Local officials say they are making progress in trying to open year-round homeless shelters in three cities in Ventura County. We'll have the details today online and in tomorrow's Star.

Thousand Oaks may get a Lowes. The home improvement store has submitted an application to open on Grande Vista Drive where Costco had talked about putting up a store last year.

And we're continuing to follow on the weekend shooting at the party in Westlake Village. As we get new information we put it up on the website and then pull it together for tomorrow's story in print.

We'll have an interesting story for tomorrow's paper on a homeowners association in Simi Valley that has been embroiled in several controversies, erupting last week in the election of a new board and charges that the voting was tainted.

And today we're finishing our reporting on a story that trout fishing at some lakes in Ventura County may be a thing of the past (at least for awhile) as stocking of trout is being stopped in the wake of a two-year-old lawsuit over the impact of the stocking program.

Here are some of the stories we are working on today ...

We're continuing to follow the weekend shooting death of Pasadena art instructor Norman Schureman at a Westlake Village house part late Saturday night. If you knew the victim or suspect, or have any information you would like to share with us, contact staff writer Adam Foxman at afoxman@vcvstar.com

Healthcare reform -- do you understand it? We're spending time today trying to figure it out ourselves now that it's passed the House and ready to be signed into law (after a brief stop in the Senate for a vote Tuesday). Do you have a specific question about how it will impact you? If so, let us know and we'll try to get the answer for you. Contact me at jmoore@vcstar.com.

The latest round of campaign finance reports are due today for Ventura County races. We're tracking them and will have the info online as soon as we can get them, and then in The Star tomorrow.

What we're working on today (Wednesday, March 17)

It's St. Patrick's Day. And the temperature is going to be in the 80s again today. This should be the last day of our winter heat wave, with temperatures dropping by Thursday back into the 60s for a couple of days and into the mid-70s for the weekend. Then spring arrives Sunday. What are you doing to celebrate the day -- whether your Irish or just loving this California weather? Let us know at jmoore@vcstar.com.

The Ronald Reagan Foundation gets a huge donation today. General Electric is giving $15 million to help pay for the two-year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of Reagan's birth. And they are donating all 208 episodes of the old TV show "GE Theater" (most of which were thought to have been lost) which Reagan hosted to the Reagan library. We'll be there for the official presentation this evening.

Simi Valley Mayor Paul Miller today delivers his annual State of the City message. What folks will be listening for (including us) is whether Miller is going to seek re-election. Two candidates wait in the wings ready to announce if Miller is going to step down.

Here are some of the stories we are working on today ....

It's a busy day in court ... at least according to the court docket. But all of you who have shown up for jury duty know about the difference between what is scheduled and what actually happens.

But we do have arraignments scheduled today for Jose Ochoa and Gabriel Lopez, accused of the Oxnard massage parlor homicide; Jaime Paredes, accused of last year's shooting death of his wife, and injuring three, in a Simi Valley dental office; and for Brian Martin, Rio School District board member accused of inappropriate sexual behavior with a child.

Also today, the county supervisors are meeting and hearing the latest on their 2010-11 budget. The message: red ink continues.

A ceremony today in Conejo Valley will honor five homeless veterans with military funerals.

Here are some of the stories we are working on today ...

The weekend shooting deaths of the employee and family members of the U.S. consulate in Juarez heightens concern about travel to Mexico. We are looking into that today to see if the rising violence is keeping people away, either for spring break trips for college students or humanitarian projects. We are also looking for people who have growing concern about family members living in Mexico or those who are concerned about going home for a visit. Let me know if you are thinking of changing your travel plans to Mexico: jmoore@vcstar.com.

We're also awaiting the word on how Oxnard High School did in the state Academic Decathlon. We should get results by early afternoon.

And we're working on a story looking at what developers are doing to try to offset the new regulations on preventing stormwater runoff on projects in the county ... and what they say that will ultimately cost you, the consumer. Environmentalists explain why the new rules are important and why it seems Ventura County is first in the state with such stringent regs.

Here's what we're working on today (Friday, March 12)

It's filing day for the June California primary election. Candidates must have their paperwork filed -- either at county or state offices, depending on the seat -- by 5 p.m. today. The only exception is for seats where the incumbent is not seeking re-election. Then the filing period is extended until next week. In many races, candidate wait until the last moment to drop off their petitions (even though they long ago announced for the seat). So we'll follow the suspense this afternoon.

The show is on. It's the bald eagle show from Santa Rosa Island. Staff writer Zeke Barlow takes a look at the fascinating community that has sprung up around the live videocam that points at the next of bald eagles on the island. And they have something new to watch: two eagle eggs have been laid.

It's men's day at the California Community College State Basketball Tournament being held this weekend at California Lutheran University. No local teams made it to the final eight on the men's side, but our Joe Curley will be there all day, letting you know what's happening. Follow Joe on his blog which includes video clips provided by the Star's Matt Gray and on Twitter at @vcscolleges.

Speaking of politics, the Republicans gather this weekend for their state party convention. Political writer Timm Herdt previews the affair for us later today.

The Oxnard school board last night unanimously rejected a plan for a charter school. We'll update the story today and let you know what's next with this charter ideaa.

High school students can continue to take community college classes for free in the county. The college board passed on a chance to begin charging them fees last night. We'll have more on the decision today.

Ventura County unemployment numbers are out today. We'll post them online when they are released. It will be interesting to see if the figure stayed flat, like the national average released last week.

We'll have more later today on the arrest of the four men on Santa Rosa Island and the seizure of a ton of marijuana after their boat wrecked.

Look for some possible fireworks today when the county's five small cities pitch their projects to be funded with federal block grant money. There are more projects than money and the county gets to decide who gets what. Meeting starts at 8:30 a.m. and we'll be there.
